Stunning Buildings With Whole Trees

This would have been the ultimate house as a kid.

From the NY Times, an unmilled tree can hold 50% more weight than the largest piece of lumber milled from the same tree. The more whole wood is used in place of steel, the less carbon is pumped into the air. By peeling smaller weed trees out of a crowded forest stand, the remaining trees get bigger and healthier. The small diameter trees are useful for rafters and framing. The large trees that were downed by wind or disease make for excellent columns and beams. This low cost, energy efficient structure is from the vision of World Tree Architecture and Construction. Whole Trees can keep construction costs as low as $100 per square foot. There is much to admire about this fantastically, brilliant idea.

I would have actually been excited to go to school every day if that was the bed I woke up from.

This energy efficient building gets the inherent energy benefits of the unmilled wood along with solar panel technology.

You may have guessed by now that I did some running this weekend. Cynthetica and I travelled West to San Antonio for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half-Marathon and we had a blast! There were some pre-race nerves, but we did better than we expected with a time of 2 hours, 29 minutes and 7 seconds. Considering this was the longest run I'd ever attempted, I was pretty pleased! The highlight of the course for me (aside from the finish line) had to be one spectator's "inspiring" sign spied around mile 8: "Don't stop now...Finishing is your only damn option." How true.

Metropolitan Home Is Now Homeless.

Met Home's next issue will be it's last.

It's a sad day for modern home design enthusiasts. Metropolitan Home will be closing it's door by year end. The December 2009 issue will be the last for the venerable shelter magazine after 28 years in publication. Everyone that currently has a subscription to Met Home will now receive Elle Decor instead.

Metropolitan Home is joining a growing list of defunct home decor magazines with Domino, House and Garden, and O at Home all closing it's doors in the past 18 months. With the tough housing market, struggling home furnishings industry, and bad economy, shelter magazines are facing dwindling ad revenues.

Hopefully as retail sales rebounds this Holiday season and beyond, we'll be able to keep reading current shelter magazines, and new shelter magazines will emerge in these opportunistic times.

Wake Up Call

I've been having a hard time waking up lately. Maybe it's because there's nothing interesting to look at the second my eyes open. On my nightstand: two pairs of eyeglasses (for before-bed TV watching by my husband and I), a midcentury-modern white lamp, remote control, and a snoozefest of an alarm clock I've had since college. Time for an upgrade? Yes, please.

I've been eyeing this Wood LED Clock since it came into our store. The time shines through a super-thin veneer of wood. Maybe it's time I made it mine?

The simplicity of the Aura Clock appeals to my need to keep things looking clean (I try, at least), but the pop of orange on the inside of the rim appeals to my desire for something interesting.

Daily Candy recently mentioned this Emily Clock. I like the practicality of it. I mean, who enjoys craning their neck to see the time in the middle of the night? Luckily, it's stylish as well. Because a practical clock means nothing to me if it's ugly.

Of all of the clocks, the Clocky is probably the one I need the most. The only caveat: my dog might attack it the second it rolls on the floor. She goes nuts for noisy things!

A thousand apologies for my extended absence! I promise I have a good reason. The powers-that-be at work seem to think I'm worthy of more responsibilities. So, for the past two weeks, I've been learning the ropes of a new position. Now that I'm getting a grip on it, I can take a moment to post something new! What better to pull me away from the paperwork than Stella McCartney's much talked about collection for Gap?

There are some really amazing standout pieces (see below), but most of the pieces are incredibly wearable like the sweaters and leggings.

Is the Band Jacket an ode to her uber-famous father? And I love, love, love the Flower Applique Dress!

Give this tutu to the little princess in your life. I know of a few nieces who would love this kind of thing!

Closet Overhaul

It's all fine and good to clean out your closet. I've done it more times than I care to count. But what about turning you closet into something different altogether? Real Simple featured three closets that did just that...

If you can't use bright, funky wallpaper in a closet, you can't use it anywhere! What a perfect little work nook, complete with DIY wrapping paper storage and a light drape to hide it away when guests come!

I can't get enough of book nooks. What a charming alternative to a library! I love the step ladder that folds into a little reading chair.

And I've been spending all of this time looking for a small table on which to perch a bar, when all I needed was an empty closet. Okay, there is a touch of sarcasm there, because I don't have any empty closets with which to recreate any of these transformations, but I won't be living in my apartment forever, and these are lovely transformations, indeed. I love how they mirrored the closet to make it appear huge! Also, a lot of the drawers and such came from IKEA. Great storage, low price!

Lately, I've been seeing headboards paired with canopy beds everywhere! It's amazing how trends pop up so suddenly and then, Poof!, they're replaced with something else. Observe:

I spied this one in one of my magazines not too long ago. Great mix of modern and vintage.

Then, last month, I saw this one in Elle Decor, and a few pages later there was...

... this one! Love 'em both. I also like the two nightstands used in the photo above. Very creative.

Shaded Chandeliers

I need to inject a little bit of pretty into my day. I've been eyeing chandeliers with shades for a while. I love the look. It's cool and modern. Maybe I'll get one. Like the simple Rittenhouse Chandelier that we carry at the store. Nice and neutral. Interesting shape. It's a winner.

Running Wild

Judging by the crowds at Memorial Park at 5am on Saturday mornings, I'd say running season is in full swing. Time to tie on those sneakers and hit the pavement (or trail... or grass...). Currently, my running partner-in-crime, Cynthia, of Cynthetica fame, and I are preparing for the Nike Human Race, a 10K to warm up for the main event: the San Antonio Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathon in November, and the Chevron Houston Marathon in January. Will we be ready? Only time will tell.

Since the weather has decided it's not ready to cooperate with my running schedule (I could cut the humidity with a knife this morning!), I suppose I need to get inspiration elsewhere. My iPod for instance. Here are the songs that are keeping me going through the sweat, aches, and cramps...

These Boots Were Made For Walkin'

I've been on the search for a tall flat boot practically since I came to be. The day after I started walking was when I started looking for that boot. Needless to say, it's been a long, tough road. This year, I am determined to find that perfect pair.

I like the distressing on these Vintage Tall Roadster Boots from J. Crew, but I wish it had a couple more buckles to make things interesting.

The Thebna Boot from Nine West has the details I desire, but I'm not sure I'm sold on the color.

I absolutely LOVE this boot from Chloe. Refined gold buckle, great leather, cool heel, but $1,100?! I'd prefer to stay married, thankyouverymuch.

Another classic boot, this time the Isabelline Riding Boot by Ralph Lauren, but it's a bit too classic for my taste. Oh, and it's close to $1000, too. Let's see... Boots or food for two months?

These Jenny Boots from Piperlime are a close competitor. I like the style and the buckles and the color, but I wish they were more distressed.

I think I found a winner! They Cranberry Bog Boots from Anthropologie are nicely worn in (but not worn out). The color is nice and neutral but interesting. The toggle makes for a cool detail. They'd look fantastic with jeans. And the price? I won't be buying them for myself, but maybe I'll put them on my Christmas list. And if I don't get them, I know what I'll be writing about next year!

Furniture vs. Fashion: Naptime

We spent one-third of our lives in bed, so surely the piece of furniture on which we rest says something about us. And wouldn't you know it, a bed screams your style as much as, well, you.

Call me crazy, but I fell in love with this simple silhouette as soon as it arrived in our store. The Paul Bed is a perfectly tailored shape paired with a luxurious fabric, and that equals simple style. And who else knows simple? Calvin Klein, hands down. I also love Doo.Ri's elegant, simple shift.

I'm really very smitten with this vignette from the latest Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams catalog. I spied the Ming Console in a magazine last month and was very pleased to find I liked it as much in person as I did in print. The first one we put on our floor sold instantly! It's just the right amount of red for a pop of color in a neutral setting. We put ours with a dark brown velvet Kennedy sofa with red pillows. I rather like it!

I also adore it with the Kinsey Lounge that they used. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams uses a lot of tufting in their designs and they use it well. I'm a fan.

Apartment Therapy is holding a Design Showcase, and the above photo is the Good Books Shelf by Jason Neufeld. I really love this design. Incredibly simple, yet stunning. Another lovely item to put in my inspiration book for when the Mister and I get a house. It'll be happening sooner than I originally thought and the thought of it makes my stomach turn slightly!

I love it when chandeliers are put in unconventional places, like hanging from a tree branch at an outdoor party or in a bathroom. It makes them that much more interesting to look at because they don't really belong, but they look good.

A giant chandelier in the middle of a small kitchen? Why not? I love the way the white pops against a black wall.

Not a chandelier, true, but the idea is fantastic.

What a cool place to stick a chandelier, and much more interesting that two lamps.

Bathing is way more fun with pretty lighting.

This one is my favorite. A green backyard, cool weather, and a shimmery chandelier. Perfection.

I love it when I stumble upon something amazing completely unexpectedly. I've always loved the work of Hella Jongerius. Every time I find something new from her, I get so ridiculously excited. Well, this is one of those times.

While looking for a fabric, I found that she collaborated with Maharam to create the MOST AWESOME FABRIC EVER! Yes, all of those capital letters were essential.

Then I saw it made up in an ottoman, and I MUST HAVE IT!

Then, I popped over to Moss to, again, look for the fabric that brought me on this search, and what did I see?
