Stunning Buildings With Whole Trees

This would have been the ultimate house as a kid.

From the NY Times, an unmilled tree can hold 50% more weight than the largest piece of lumber milled from the same tree. The more whole wood is used in place of steel, the less carbon is pumped into the air. By peeling smaller weed trees out of a crowded forest stand, the remaining trees get bigger and healthier. The small diameter trees are useful for rafters and framing. The large trees that were downed by wind or disease make for excellent columns and beams. This low cost, energy efficient structure is from the vision of World Tree Architecture and Construction. Whole Trees can keep construction costs as low as $100 per square foot. There is much to admire about this fantastically, brilliant idea.

I would have actually been excited to go to school every day if that was the bed I woke up from.

This energy efficient building gets the inherent energy benefits of the unmilled wood along with solar panel technology.

Lots of natural light gives this house an sense of nature indoors.

Wake Up Call

I've been having a hard time waking up lately. Maybe it's because there's nothing interesting to look at the second my eyes open. On my nightstand: two pairs of eyeglasses (for before-bed TV watching by my husband and I), a midcentury-modern white lamp, remote control, and a snoozefest of an alarm clock I've had since college. Time for an upgrade? Yes, please.

I've been eyeing this Wood LED Clock since it came into our store. The time shines through a super-thin veneer of wood. Maybe it's time I made it mine?

The simplicity of the Aura Clock appeals to my need to keep things looking clean (I try, at least), but the pop of orange on the inside of the rim appeals to my desire for something interesting.

Daily Candy recently mentioned this Emily Clock. I like the practicality of it. I mean, who enjoys craning their neck to see the time in the middle of the night? Luckily, it's stylish as well. Because a practical clock means nothing to me if it's ugly.

Of all of the clocks, the Clocky is probably the one I need the most. The only caveat: my dog might attack it the second it rolls on the floor. She goes nuts for noisy things!

High Point Furniture Market - Fall 2009

We came. We saw. We conquered....in a Volkswagen Beetle.

Our team swept through the furniture capitol of the world in style. We saw tons of great stuff. High Fashion Home is going to be pushing the envelope once again with some of our furniture selections. At the same time, we were able to find a ton of value products out in the market. So expect to see more unique, chic furnishings at affordable prices in the coming months.

Here is a breakdown of some of our favorites from market:

This great Room & Board Roadster chair may have run it's course there, but it's new to us. We'll retail it for around $1299 in a black, full grain leather.

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams introduced this beautiful, retro chair in a nice vinyl.

Yes, the Chester Sofa is now available in leather!

Love the damask patterned, linen. The exposed wood finish is classic, Barbara Barry-like furniture.

Classic wing back chair in a eye-catching pink velvet.

Fun accent chairs in a Versace-like fabric.

Cool armchair in a high quality, cloud blue velvet.

Lee Industries is bringing customization to new heights. A show-stopping 84" headboard. (For a frame of reference, the lady on the left is 5'8" tall.)

We can never have enough Buddha statues.

This skirted, camel back, nailheaded sofa brings a lot of look at $1499.

Bernhardt managed to introduced more timeless frames at great prices.

I love every piece in this setting. The double nailhead treatment on the headboard is well done.

Beautiful wood chair from Martha Stewart.

This huge, roll arm sectional with top grain leather is going to retail for under $3600.

This clean, top grain leather sectional will retail under $2000. That's just ridiculous.

Very similar to our best selling Jefferson Bed, except this will be orderable in tons of fabric in twin, full, queen, and king sizes.

Very similar to Crate and Barrel's Archer Bed, except it will retail for $100 less.

Now this is a bed program. Your can order 4 different headboards with customizable height, welt, nailhead, and tufting options with no upcharge. Order it in over 50 fabrics at one price. Queen headboard only will be $1049.

We are bringing in Candice Olson's furniture collection. This gorgeous solid wood bed, with antiqued mirrors will retail around $1799.

Love the herringbone pattern on the wood. Our coffee table will be in a warm, walnut finish.

Here's the end table with the logo symbolizing that the woods are from sustainable sources.

Mirror accents pieces are the craze. There are over 4 wood finishes that you can order this piece in.

This glamorous end table with the fluted, solid wood drawers is shown in chic, white hardware.

Closet Overhaul

It's all fine and good to clean out your closet. I've done it more times than I care to count. But what about turning you closet into something different altogether? Real Simple featured three closets that did just that...

If you can't use bright, funky wallpaper in a closet, you can't use it anywhere! What a perfect little work nook, complete with DIY wrapping paper storage and a light drape to hide it away when guests come!

I can't get enough of book nooks. What a charming alternative to a library! I love the step ladder that folds into a little reading chair.

And I've been spending all of this time looking for a small table on which to perch a bar, when all I needed was an empty closet. Okay, there is a touch of sarcasm there, because I don't have any empty closets with which to recreate any of these transformations, but I won't be living in my apartment forever, and these are lovely transformations, indeed. I love how they mirrored the closet to make it appear huge! Also, a lot of the drawers and such came from IKEA. Great storage, low price!

Superbed

Lately, I've been seeing headboards paired with canopy beds everywhere! It's amazing how trends pop up so suddenly and then, Poof!, they're replaced with something else. Observe:

I spied this one in one of my magazines not too long ago. Great mix of modern and vintage.

Then, last month, I saw this one in Elle Decor, and a few pages later there was...

... this one! Love 'em both. I also like the two nightstands used in the photo above. Very creative.

Shaded Chandeliers

I need to inject a little bit of pretty into my day. I've been eyeing chandeliers with shades for a while. I love the look. It's cool and modern. Maybe I'll get one. Like the simple Rittenhouse Chandelier that we carry at the store. Nice and neutral. Interesting shape. It's a winner.

Rittenhouse Fabric Pendant at High Fashion Home, $599.

I like how these chandeliers are all of the sparkle this restaurant needs. Everything else is simple and neutral.

I cannot remember where I found this one, but it's striking having the shaded chandelier in a virtually outdoor setting. P.S. Love the little bar set up at the bottom of the photo!

These Boots Were Made For Walkin'

I've been on the search for a tall flat boot practically since I came to be. The day after I started walking was when I started looking for that boot. Needless to say, it's been a long, tough road. This year, I am determined to find that perfect pair.
I like the distressing on these Vintage Tall Roadster Boots from J. Crew, but I wish it had a couple more buckles to make things interesting.
The Thebna Boot from Nine West has the details I desire, but I'm not sure I'm sold on the color.

I absolutely LOVE this boot from Chloe. Refined gold buckle, great leather, cool heel, but $1,100?! I'd prefer to stay married, thankyouverymuch.

Another classic boot, this time the Isabelline Riding Boot by Ralph Lauren, but it's a bit too classic for my taste. Oh, and it's close to $1000, too. Let's see... Boots or food for two months?

These Jenny Boots from Piperlime are a close competitor. I like the style and the buckles and the color, but I wish they were more distressed.

I think I found a winner! They Cranberry Bog Boots from Anthropologie are nicely worn in (but not worn out). The color is nice and neutral but interesting. The toggle makes for a cool detail. They'd look fantastic with jeans. And the price? I won't be buying them for myself, but maybe I'll put them on my Christmas list. And if I don't get them, I know what I'll be writing about next year!

Furniture vs. Fashion: Naptime

We spent one-third of our lives in bed, so surely the piece of furniture on which we rest says something about us. And wouldn't you know it, a bed screams your style as much as, well, you.

Call me crazy, but I fell in love with this simple silhouette as soon as it arrived in our store. The Paul Bed is a perfectly tailored shape paired with a luxurious fabric, and that equals simple style. And who else knows simple? Calvin Klein, hands down. I also love Doo.Ri's elegant, simple shift.

***

Ever long to be from another time? Remember the days when ladies dressed up to do errands? Behnaz Sarafpour and Rachel Roy do. And Anthropologie is making antique style new again with their Italian Campaign Canopy Bed. Bellissima.

***
Nothing Martha Stewart does is ever sloppy. She is the Queen of Put-Together and the Irvington Nickel Bed is no exception. The same is true of Michael Kors (King of the Jet-Setters) and Ralph Lauren (King of the Ivy Leaguers).

***

Just because you're a girl doesn't mean you want to parade around in ruffles and flowers all the time. Masculine touches counter your sweet temperament. Casamidy's Altavista Leather Headboard is just the right amount of masculine with woven leather in a boxy shape. For your wardrobe, there's a leather trench from 3.1 Phillip Lim or a trendier boyfriend jacket from Antonio Berardi.

***

Or perhaps you shun all things manly, preferring to look the part of the girly-girl you are. Hey, it's your life. In that case, I'd curl up on the Helena Bed from Oly Studio with its carved, whitewashed wood frame, raffia upholstery, and antiqued nailheads. Throw on, what else?, a dress from Derek Lam or Christopher Kane and take on the world.

Low Rider

I always like an easy-to-duplicate look, and this one is no exception...

The low shelf makes the ceilings seem sky-high-er. I'd love to place some large framed pieces along that ledge. Photo via Coco + Kelley.

I like how the ledge is a continuation of one of the bookshelves. I'll be keeping this photo handy for the future. Photo via Apartment Therapy.
Since I'm always in favor of the DIY option, I might pick up a few shelves from IKEA and get to work! The Lack wall shelf comes in sizes from to 12" to 75", so it can fit into a wide range of spaces.

Shakespeare in Love

First there was this:

Lines from A Midsummer Night's Dream was transplanted onto wallpaper by Tracy Kendall. (P.S. It's now sold at Anthropologie for $698 per roll. Pricey, yes, but it's all handstitched.)

Then I ran into this while perusing Apartment Therapy:

The entire script to Romeo and Juliet is printed on these sheets. Unfortunately, they're no longer available as Caban, the former home division to Club Monaco (which I <3),>

Chanda-where?

I love it when chandeliers are put in unconventional places, like hanging from a tree branch at an outdoor party or in a bathroom. It makes them that much more interesting to look at because they don't really belong, but they look good.

A giant chandelier in the middle of a small kitchen? Why not? I love the way the white pops against a black wall.

Not a chandelier, true, but the idea is fantastic.

What a cool place to stick a chandelier, and much more interesting that two lamps.

Bathing is way more fun with pretty lighting.

This one is my favorite. A green backyard, cool weather, and a shimmery chandelier. Perfection.

It's Serendipity!

I love it when I stumble upon something amazing completely unexpectedly. I've always loved the work of Hella Jongerius. Every time I find something new from her, I get so ridiculously excited. Well, this is one of those times.

Layers by Hella Jongerius for Maharam

While looking for a fabric, I found that she collaborated with Maharam to create the MOST AWESOME FABRIC EVER! Yes, all of those capital letters were essential.

Layers in Ash/Quartz/Grass

Then I saw it made up in an ottoman, and I MUST HAVE IT!

Layers in Earth/Chocolate/Coral

Then, I popped over to Moss to, again, look for the fabric that brought me on this search, and what did I see?
A Nike shoe MADE FROM LAYERS!!! This day is too good to be true.

Getting Dress-ed

I'm obsessed with finding cute dresses right now. (Oddly, I wasn't obsessed with it at the beginning of the summer, which is prime dress season!) There's the "Throw-it-on-and-go" appeal, and also the "Looking-dressy-with-little-effort" aspect. My main qualifications are as follows: 1. It must be comfortable 2. It must look dressier than it is 3. It must have sleeves because with the A/C on full blast everywhere you go, it can get a bit chilly here. Here are my finds for every occasion:
For shopping in the Heights: This dress is the perfect mixture of boho and polish. Silk Paisley Dress in True Navy, $98 @ Banana Republic.
For a fancy dinner (or for one of the thousand weddings coming up!): J. Crew has the BEST chic cocktail dresses for good prices. I bought a black strapless number a few years ago and it has served me well, but I keep ogling this adorable wrap dress. Fun fact: I let my bridesmaids pick out their own J. Crew dresses for my wedding and big sis was thisclose to getting this one, but, alas, when she went to order it, they didn't have her size in stock! Boo. Okay, that was a lot of commentary for one dress, but, what can I say? I really like it. Silk Taffeta Ruffle Wrap Dress in Light Pewter, $175 @ J. Crew.

For days when I'm feeling particularly High-Fashion-y: I love mixing prints on dresses. It makes me look creative, even if I'm not. Orpheous Dress in Orange Multi, $1,395 by Duro Olowu @ Barneys Co-op.

For work: Simple is always practical for work and the sash flatters waists. Button Duo Dress in Blue, $168 @ Anthropologie.

For a party! Dare I say, this is my favorite? For one, it looks incredibly comfortable and universally flattering. Also, the chain detail is awesomely tough because I'm a closeted biker chick. Bowery Dress in Shadow, $595 by Catherine Malandrino @ ShopBop.

Art Education: Working with Patterns

Part of what I love about wallpaper is that it can negate the need for art. It can be visually dynamic enough to run the whole show. That said, some well=placed clusters of art on a busy, patterned wall can look fantastic.

It's important to start with a strong base. In the photo above, the black-framed pieces provide a base on which the other pieces can build.

The pattern of the wallpaper is also important. All of these are relatively small prints. Small frames would get lost in a larger print.

I think the most important factor is unity. There has to be some unifying characteristic in the art. This is perfect, because the frames are all the same and the color red unites the entire room.

I also like how the placement of the art seems intentional, but also somewhat random. They aren't placed in a perfect square or rectangle. Some stick out at the bottom and some are placed farther apart that others. In this photo, it even seems to incorporate the sconce and the intercom.

BFF's 4-eva!

Pick Up Sticks Necklace by The Docent, $105

Quick! What does this necklace remind you of? If you said "Those friendship bracelets I used to make in elementary school!!!"... Bingo! Is this cool again? Are we doing this? Because I will bust out my collection of embroidery floss and get to twisting!
Yesterday, I found these on Apartment 34:
by For You, For Me via Etsy
Oh, it is on (like Donkey Kong).

P.S. After I found those two necklaces, I wanted to see if I still had to bracelet making skills...
Now I know. That skill is permenantly implanted in my brain. Awesome.

...and the Third Floor.

Nellie is a nice, dainty print, but which color do I choose? From Grow House Grow!

I love the Maidenhead print for its bold simplicity. By Jill Malek.

Louise Body makes some delicious prints. Go nice with Garden Birds or naughty with Erotica.

For a sharp burst of color, I'd choose Elizabeth by Madison & Grow.

Felt Up

Felt. Don't confuse these accessories (sophisticated felt) with the stuff you used to make little figures out of in 3rd grade (crafty felt). I love how the clutch below, by Graf & Lantz, is embossed with a zebra pattern to upgrade it to Night-Out status. It's lined in contrasting taffeta and it's only $89! Not too shabby!

I adore this quirky handmade felt bowl made from the wool of Ohio Valley Sheep. Yet another perfect addition for my eclectic collection of catchalls. At Anthropologie, $68 for medium. Small and Wee (how adorable!) Felt Bowls also available.

That's Not A Bad Idea

I was always a fan of the whole chalkboard paint thing. While furnishing a model apartment in the Mosaic, Cyn and I tranformed one wall in the kitchen into a blackboard and loved it:

But now, I might have to join Team Dry-Erase. I've discovered Idea Paint. It works the same way as chalkboard paint, but it's white (or beige, or even orange!) and you can turn a room into a giant dry-erase board without the looming dark walls!

See? The room stays airy and bright, and you have a huge surface on which to draw, doodle, and erase.

And, of course, it's a kids best friend. "Yes, Suzy. You may draw on the walls!" P.S. Isn't that tree adorable?

Baby, It's Hot Outside

There is nothing worse than coming in from the 100 degree heat just to get into a hot bed. You wouldn't wear a coat in July, so why should your bed? I adhere to the idea of using the hot months as a chance to change up my bedroom a little bit and just use sheets. Okay, and maybe a light blanket, because that air conditioning can get drafty. When I use my patterned comforter, I stick to basic white sheets, but when the duvet is a away, the sheets can play (or something like that). Here are the ones I have my eye on:

Rubie Green's East Village Sheet Set, $179-229

Crate & Barrel's Tallulah Sheet Set, $45-$80

West Elm's Printed Percale Sheet Set, $79-119

Hey Mama

It took me too long to realize just how cool my mom is. Sorry, Mom! I knew for sure she was cool the other day when I was checking out the pillows on Jonathan Adler's website and some of the patterns looked strangely familiar...

My mom made these pillows and the bench cushion when she and my dad lived on the East Coast for the Navy in the late 60's/early 70's.

The pillows and bench are needlepointed in a Bargello style motif. What was very cool back then is cool once again.

Look familiar? The bottom right pillow in the Chevron pattern is the same one my mom used to cover her bench (except for the colors, of course!). Oh, Mom... You're so cool.

Jonathan Adler pillows, clockwise from top left: Bargello Waves Pillow in Multi, 16x16, $125; Bargello Puzzle Pillow, 22x22, $175; Bargello Chevron Pillow, 22x22, $175; Bargello Kaleidoscope Pillow, 12x12, $95.

Let's Take This Outside!

I know it's horrifically hot outside, but doesn't a beautiful outdoor dining space look so appealing? So maybe I'll wait to indulge until the crispness of fall hits the air, but I'll be plotting my ideas in the meantime...

This one loosely reminds me of the outdoor area my sister, Becca, had at her former California abode. They had an arbor laced with ivy and little flowers. It was so pretty! I like the one above, from Martha Stewart... especially with the addition of several glass lanterns hanging overhead.

I don't know how practical this would be, dining in a field of tall grass, but it makes for a breathtaking photo! via Coco+Kelley.

This one, also from Coco+Kelley, is so glamourous with the beautiful arbor and the vintage chandelier hanging above. If I'd had a small outdoor wedding, this is how I would have done it. (Note to my parents: I loved my wedding just the way it was!)

Cha-Cha-Chartreuse

I suppose I'm slightly biased. I even like to say the word chartreuse. It rolls off the tongue so nicely. Chartreuse.

It's a good thing the color itself can back up all the hype I'm giving it. It's punchy yellow with an undertone of green. Sounds like a winning combination to me. Perhaps you should try some on this summer...

I like the unexpected pop of chartreuse behind the striped pillows. Loverly! Photo via Domino (r.i.p.).

I kind of want to buy this clock. I'm trying to resist the urge! Innermost Eclipse Clock, $184 @ High Fashion Home.

The company is my new obsession. There will be further posts on Casamidy, but for now, you can enjoy the Almidi Arch Table. It can be painted in any Benjamin Moore color!

I fell in love with this Rory Beca top that I found in Lucky. So swingy and airy for a summer night out.

This is NOT Your Church's Stained Glass

I've spotted a couple of cool, geometric stained glass inspirations lately that I thought I could share with you. What do you think? Tres chic or am I off my rocker?

I found this one in Lucky magazine. It's a surf shop in San Francisco called Mollusk (love the name, too). I love how the arches cut through the window panes. Very cool.

I found this one over at Coco+Kelley (love to read that blog!). The colors could go kinda 70's (not that that would be a bad thing), but the mostly white interior keeps it fresh and modern.

Just a Little Bit

A little neon goes a long way. I'd say we learned that the hard way in the early 90's. A lot of horrendous Fresh Prince of Belair outfits come to mind... Luckily, when you pair a bit of neon with neutrals, it comes off as fun, not tragic. Observe:

Let's start at the beginning. This is the moment when my neon obsession began. Suede used hot pink eyelashes on his model during the last season of Project Runway. I. Loved. It. (P.S. The new season starts August 20th on Lifetime. I can't wait!)

It's very Mad Men meets the 80's where the very classic pump sports a neon yellow toe. Well played, Michael Kors.

This is why I love J. Crew. I can get in on the action without going completely broke. Claire Neon-Trimmed Leather Ballet Flats in British Khaki, $148.

It's no surprise that Matthew Williamson would get in on the neon trend. His collections are some of the most vibrantly colored ones I've ever seen!

Accessories are my favorite, no matter what kind. You can have fun with accessories- go bright, go funky, go with an insanely dizzying pattern, it's all good!

Keeping the above proclamation in mind, I love collecting dishtowels. As soon as I got my own place, I began snatching them up. Striped ones, holiday ones, vintage-inspired ones... The list goes on. They add a much needed dose of color to an otherwise generic and bland apartment kitchen. Here are some of the ones that have caught my eye lately...

I love the depth of the plum color and I'm always a sucker for batik! Bubble chain linen tea towels from 5 o'clock Crows via Etsy, $26 (P.S. There are more colors available!)

Nothing says whimsy like a Marimekko print! Kippis Tea Towels (set of two), $22.50 via Finn Style.

I always pick up two or three towels when I go to Crate & Barrel. At 4 bucks a pop, why not? Salsa Stripe Dishtowels, $3.95 each.

This reminds me of the trip my hubby and I took to Acapulco. Growth Spurt Dishtowel, $16 at Anthropologie.

These are classic kitchen decor. May vintage labels never go out of style! Italian Kitchen Towels, $5.95 each at Sur La Table.

Light Up The Night!

Jacket from Topshop, Heidi Sequined Tank by Son of John from ShopBop.

I don't know about your city, but in Houston setting off your own fireworks is a big no-no. That means using a bit of ingenuity. Create your own fireworks with some strategically placed lights and a super sequined dress (or top... or skirt... or anything). Happy Sparkly Fourth of July!

It's A Cruel Summer

I don't know if you noticed, but it's REALLY hot outside. As in, triple-digit hot. Let's just say I'd like to be as bare as possible when facing the great outdoors. At this point, if I could walk around all day in a swimsuit, I would. I imagine my week would look something like this:

Monday: They say red is the best color for board meetings because it conveys power. Does that mean the little heart print conveys a love of power? Let's go with "yes". Victoria's Secret T-Cutout Monokini, on sale at $29.50.

Tuesday: Something sophisticated is needed for the annual review. Could I get some Louboutins for a dash of color? J. Crew Jersey Lomellina Ruched Tank, $115.

Wednesday: A black string bikini is as classic for swimwear as a Chanel suit is for couture (right?). This will work perfectly for a business dinner to woo a new client. Gap Essential String Bikini Top & Bottom (sold separately).

Thursday: Company Happy Hour at 4! It's time to have some fun! Athleta Pop Art Splice Tankini, $69.

Friday: It's the end of the week! Put on something pretty to motivate you through the paperwork and push you on to the weekend. Anthropologie Chinaberry Grove Bandeau & Bottoms (sold separately), $78 each.
If that's what we're wearing to work, imagine the weekends!

HF Weekly Obsession: For the Ladies

We're adding another facet to our little midtown store: boutique. The entire first floor has been transformed with the arrival of a few very cool and comfortable lines of woman's clothing. We've even added a fitting room (a project that was tackled exceptionally by Cynthia, our store's displayer.)!
We're slowly bringing in new lines of tees, dresses, and pants for your shopping pleasure.
I love these easy, simple dresses from Dolan. I don't care how cute something is if it isn't comfy, but these feel as good as they look. We've got this dress in purple and a funky tie-dye.

Woman cannot live in dresses alone. On weekends, hoodies are key, and one with interesting details keeps you from that rolled-out-of-bed look (even if you did just roll out of bed). Try one from Splendid, the masters of comfort. We've got the one above in sunny yellow!

I think these satin harem pants from Maggie Ward are so cool. They're as light as air, so when you pair them with dressy heels and a simple top, you'll feel just like Lady Gaga (you know, sans pants).

There are only so many ways you can do a white tee, but I love the slouchy pocket on this one from K. Allyn. It's a white tee, but fashionized. Get yours here.

Get to the Point

I have an odd hobby. It's not odd in general- just for a 26-year-old. I love to cross-stitch. My mom did it. My sister did (does?) it. I do it. It's relaxing. The only skills needed are the abilities to count and undo knots. When I finish a piece, I get a frame-worthy piece of art that I didn't even have to design myself!

I just finished this sampler...

...after about a year of hard stitching. Now I'm on to my next project.
I can't help but feel I'm not the only one into stitching with all of the needlepoint-inspired details out there. I found all of these gems at Anthropologie...
Not only is the silhouette for the Bistrica Top perfect for summer, the cross-stitched roses are too romantic! $88
This Nearly Needlepoint Satchel would cost a fortune if the entire design was hand-stitched, but it's printed so it's more in my price range at $90.

This is the kind of thing I could see making for myself, but Anthropologie does a pretty good job, too! Alstromeria Ottoman, $298.

Hand Written

You know that feeling when you get a handwritten note in the mail? It feels good, like someone took that little bit of extra time to say hello. Handwriting is undeniably warmer than the cold text of Times New Roman. That's why I love the ways that designers are incorporating handwriting into their pieces...

A Touch of Goth

I figure anytime a new Twilight trailer comes out, people will embrace their inner vampire and goth it up a bit. I'm liking the loads of black lace in fashion and design right now. It's just enough to make Edward Cullen do a double-take...

...Especially if you were sporting Stella McCartney like Liv Tyler at the Time 100 or Kate Bosworth at the Met Ball!

Now, that's what one would call "Sex on Legs". Lace Stilettos by Coppelia Pique.

Goth for beginners: Free People "Lacey Insert Blouse", $98 at 80's Purple.

Throw a midnight party with this as the centerpiece. Come Rain, Come Shine Chandelier in Black by Tord Boontje.

Chanel always nails the look... even for Spring.

Add a dash of goth to your packages with Lace Tape in black, $10 at Matter.

Bond, James Bond

I don't know about you guys but I love James Bond movies. The best part would be the fact that he has the coolest, high-tech gadgets. Well, wait no more because we will be able to talk to someone via wrist watch!

LG is releasing the GD910 this July in Europe. The list of cool components range from a Bluetooth, 1.4-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, text to speech capability, and MP3 player--it's pretty much loaded. All we have to do is wait until it's available in the United States!!

Tiers of Joy!

Ruffles and Summer go together like me and Starbucks: best of friends. Ever since I blogged about this jacket from Anthropologie...

...back in January, I've been hooked on tiered sleeves. Since then, it seems like I've seen them all over the place.

For instance, Daniella whipped up this tiered coat for The Fashion Show (I am hooked.)...

Then, I spied this Moschino trench within the pages of Marie Claire...

What a shame! It's 2900 bucks. Oh well, scrap that one. I also spied this Anna Sui jacket with little mini ruffled sleeved at ShopBop.

On sale for $300?! Still pricey, but more my speed.
Please, oh please, say that tiers are here to stay!

I Love the 80's: Neon

To kick off my homage to the resurgence of all things 80's (gasp!), I've collected a few neon treasures that I'd love to sport. I'm not going full on bright with an outfit of neon Units (oh, yeah! Remember those?!), but I could rock a neon necklace with a black dress. The 80's is back... take it in small doses.

Clockwise from top left: Tom Binns "Dumont Noir Fluorescent Earrings", $220; J. Crew "Neon Patent Capri Sandals" in Neon Orange, $39.50; Givenchy Necklace (coming to Macy's); Dannijo "Collage Ring" in Electric Pink, $190.

Totally Floored

Admit it. You've always been a bit of a rebel. You wouldn't think twice about jumping on the back of a bike (not the kind you pedal) and that leather jacket you sport all the time isn't just for show. It's about time your house matched your badass personality.

Ting Home has the perfect thing: Embossed leather flooring. On first glance, it looks like ordinary wood flooring, but a closer look reveals patterned strips of leather. Awesome.

Mood Lighting

I love nothing more than to sit on a back patio with a chilled glass of Riesling and a plate of cheese and fruit and chat with friends and family until the mosquitoes chase us indoors. Sometimes, when the weather is cool enough, the mosquitoes don't make an appearance and we can hang out well into the night. That's when I would want a setup like the one above (from a Grange ad). Strands of fairy lights and mismatched paper lanterns are such a better alternative to tiki torches and citronella candles.
Since Martha Stewart could never leave anything plain, hers have pretty paper butterflies affixed. I like these for a sweet outdoor chandelier at a dinner party.

The Nuevo Star lanterns have a little more punch and I love them in small doses. I would have never thought to place one in front of a cabinet/bar, but it's cute and quirky! BTW: We carry these at the store in lots of vibrant colors!

This Is What Heaven Looks Like...

via Elle Decor May '09
I recently uploaded some new finds to the Rooms We Love section (to your right!), and was particularly fond of these two finds. Okay, "fond" is an understatement. I think they're heavenly. I love how to bed above combines modern and vintage so literally. The mismatched nightstands are the perfect complement to the traditional/modern/eclectic style.

via Domino's final issue :(
I've been salivating over this photo for a while. I absolutely love the drapes! They add softness to the windows without blocking the light, and the calm neutral fabric doesn't overpower the rest of the peaceful room. The cowhide stool add a touch of rustic cool to the traditional (with funky, modern pillows) settee. I don't know what your version of Heaven looks like, but this is mine!
P.S. Happy 30th Birthday, hubby! I love you!

Fashion vs. Furniture: The Poolside Edition

How time gets away from me! I haven't written one of these since February! I'd say it's about time, eh?

This time around, the pool, and the cocktails that surround them, was my inspiration. I've paired an outdoor party theme with a signature drink and added a dash of fashion to bring a little summer to our little blog. Enjoy!

P.S. As you can see, I had a bit of fun with Poladroid. It's awesome!

I know Cinco de Mayo is in the past, but that's no reason not to throw an improptu fiesta en la playa! Serve up some top notch maragaritas and sport a bright patterned suit by Emilio Pucci.

How about a sweet garden party complete with colorful butterflies and chic hats? Serve your guests a twist on a classic with a Peach Julep, and up the sugar factor in a floral maillot by Badgley Mischka.

You can't not celebrate Independence Day! And just watching the Will Smith flick doesn't count. In addition to burgers and barbeque, whip up a colorful beverage in your star-spangled suit by Michael Kors.

I saved my favorite for last. Nothing beats a wine and cheese party, especially when the wine comes in Sangria form and the cheese is extra smelly! Put on something sophisticated in basic black, from Just Cavalli, with a hint of sparkle to play the perfect hostess.

Open Sesame!

I was totally inspired by this page from Traditional Home! My main complaint about my small apartment is that it literally has no entryway of which to speak. Insanity, I tell you! Someday, I'll get my hands on a spacious entryway and jazz it up my way. My first step will be to wallpaper it in a vivacious, colorful print!

This one feels very gardenish to me, but not quite in the literal sense. The walls are floral, yes, but the legs on the table add an organic, surreal quality. From House Beautiful.

I just noticed that the wallpaper picks up the teal tile below. What a prime example of exploding pattern into a small space. From Domino: The Book of Decorating.

How hard is it to pull off neon wallpaper in a home? I don't really know. But this works. All subsequent photos from Domino.

Compared to some of these entryways, this one almost seems tame, but there's just enough pattern to not make it just another house.

I love the very thrown together quality of this. The geometric paper is very precise and linear, while to stacks of magazines muss it up just enough.

I would use elements of this in my own decorating, like the shabby chair. It's a very rustic, eclectic look.

I love that she used the pattern on three walls instead of the usual two. I really grabs your attention!

And then you see this and it commands your attention! Although this feels a bit clubby to me, it is a very cool look and the other elements in the room are subdued enough to keep it from going off the deep end.

This one is so sweet and serene. The pattern isn't overwhelming, keeping the spaces light and airy, but saving it from being blah.

Key To My <3

I love the new Tiffany & Co. keys collection. They're exquisite for sure. But the smallest one is 250 bucks, and that's a little beyond my budget right now. I might not be able to afford diamonds, but I can afford Etsy. Going with the skeleton key theme, I found several cute necklaces with vintage style that will satisfy my need for keys...

Gold Key Necklace from Cherry Street Jewelry, $26.

This one's my favorite! Skeleton Key & Aventurine Necklace from Jeweled Ambrosia, $26.

Key To My Heart Necklace from Rock Paper Silver, $24.

Cool Nurseries! (Is That An Oxymoron?)

First of all, let me preface this blog by saying that I am neither pregnant, nor intend to be in the near future. I say this for the sake of my mom and sisters who faithfully read this blog.

While perusing through pictures pulled from the Domino website before they took it down (still upset about that, by the way. Sniff!), I noticed a lot of really cool nurseries. As in, I would decorate my adult bedroom the way they decorated their kids' room. Each photo had its own little inspiration...

The very pale aqua offsets the awesome wallpapered ceiling wonderfully. What a novel idea! Wallpaper on the ceiling!

These ebony-stained wood walls are breathtaking! And not a pastel in sight!

If I was to do pink, this is how I want to do it- fiery, in your face, unapologetic! That Amanda Peet sure does have style...

I like this one solely for its space saving ideas. The fuzzy throw rug is fun, too!

Obviously, I'm on a linen kick lately (see my last blog!) Wrinkly linen drapes are pretty for baby.

I love the idea of using a blown up picture of the kids as their own work of art. The fairy light chandelier is a playful light fixture.

Fancy chair, rustic fabric: Isabelle Club Chair, $899 at High Fashion Home.

Summer is the season for linen. Something about that natural, un-dyed linen makes me swoon! Especially when it's used for something that is typically dressy (i.e. the strapless dress and heels below). And don't even get me started on how I feel about adding sparkle!

Hand-Crafted Cool

I'm in love...

With the arrival of Spring, we see the departure of the crisp, tailored looks of winter, and usher in a flowy, casual aesthetic. I'm loving the bohemian chic necklaces that embody that fancy-free look. They're all just a bit imperfect. They're easy to wear with boyfriend jeans and a white tee. They're so Marni Spring 2005. They're lovely.

Flip-Flopping

Well, the weather is officially getting warm, which means only one thing: It's time to break out the flip-flops! To be honest, I pretty much wear them year-round. It doesn't get very cold here and they're oh-so-comfy. The only difference is that now, people don't tell me I'm going to get frostbite.

In hot climates, flip-flops are the go-to shoe. You need them for day, night, weekend, casual, dressy, you name it. I absolutely live in them! I've been scouting out new pairs to add to my collection...

Here are my top picks, some realistic, some only in my dreams!
Row One: Loeffler Randall "Sydney" in Dark Navy, $450 at Barney's Co-op; Tory Burch "Logo Flat Thong" in Hibiscus Pink, $195 at Neiman Marcus; Bandolino "Claribell" in Dark Green, $59.
Row Two: Por la Victoire "Ella" in Rose, $215 at Piperlime; J. Crew "Dauphine" in Neon Yellow, $88; Old Navy "Beaded Thong Sandals" in Multi, $14.50.

Luxurious, Minimalist Interior Design!

Luxury, Tamed! - NY Times

Kips Bay Decorator Show House was a tribute to Albert Hadley, the Tennessee-born minimalist who provided a balance for the English country house-style maximalism of his partner, Sister Parish. Check out some on the luscious photos of eclectic interior decorating at it's best:

The tufted, velvet chaise is unbelievably, fabulous.

Liza Cousins and Natasha Bergreen's softer design incorporated used athletic equipment and a sofa from Ms. Bergreen's aunt.

Combining a very traditional bed with a beautiful lilac fabric, makes the bed a perfect fit in this modern room.

Christopher Maya hung a metal chandelier dipped in plaster.

The wallpaper in Jamie Drake's room was handpainted by Alpha Workshops. It's wonderful when you can fit a sofa that long in your room. Every furniture piece and color complements each other exquisitely.

William T. Georgis's panic room anticipated impending global catastrophe with a twirling disco ball, automatic weapons (reproductions, of course) and a Russ Meyer movie.

An homage to the "Bocca della Verità" (The Mouth of Truth) in Rome, John Ike's room is a challenge to "be your truest self" in bed, he said. The bales of hay he used as side tables were "just an idea."

The decorator Amy Lau had Jo Lynn Alcorn, a paper artist, make an installation of Maya Romanoff wallpaper.

Earth Day 2009: More Trees!

Thanks to everyone for helping partner with High Fashion Home and the Arbor Day Foundation. As of March 31st, 2009, we have now planted 3,554 trees. For every piece of furniture purchased, one tree is planted. 3,554 trees may seem a lot or it may seem a little. Either way, we appreciate everyone with helping us make a difference. Addressing our global climate change is bigger than any one person or organization. It's going to take all of us to pitch in and contribute.

The benefits of one tree can make a positive impact for years to come:
  • One tree can absorb more than a ton of carbon dioxide
  • Over the course of 50 years, a single tree can control $31,500 of soil erosion.
  • Trees help maintain clean water supplies.
  • One tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen a year.
Learn more about how you can help.

Doorways are, in general, a spectacular disappointment. I mean, they're usually quite boring- off-white trim, standard molding, blah, blah, blah. That's why I've fallen in love with the two looks below. They've taken an area that most people neglect, and given it purpose. They've made it the focal point. Doorways across the world, rejoice. The Perfect Sofa: Oprah

Nate Berkus gives some great tips on how to the pick the perfect sofa. Mainly, buy the plainest, most neutral, and most classic sofa you can find. There are two reasons for this. One, you'll get sick of a patterned, crazy color sofa. Two, you can have the flexibility to transform the look of a sofa with accessories (throws, pillows, etc).

Here are the perfect sofas from Oprah:

You can't go wrong in your formal living room with a Chesterfield style sofa. I'm a little partial to our Chester Sofa. But if I had to pick one, I like the bottom sofa. Unfortunately, it retails for over $11,000.

For your traditional sofa, you can go a multitude of directions. The Century Furniture piece in the middle retails for $2800. It's their petite take on a camel back sofa.

Slipcover sofas. I've owned one, and I loved it. You can't go wrong with the Alexa Sofa from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams at the top. My sister has it in her house. I can testify that it's comfortable from the amount of times that I've crashed on it. Plus, it's a great value at $1299.

In our tailored sofas category, I'm a big fan of the top two. The top one is the Petrie Sofa from Crate and Barrel. Great mid-century modern sofa. It was the sofa in "The Break Up" with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. The middle sofa is the Lampert Sofa from Jonathan Adler. The frame is beautiful. The white lacquered based is a refined touch.

With your minimalist sofas, you can't go wrong with the Klippan Sofa from Ikea. You get 98 inches of sofa and it'll only cost you $499.

In the ultramodern sofa category, always bet on Vladimir Kagan. The Hahn Sofa (at the top) is a stylish piece that will look just as beautiful floating in the middle of the room as it does against a wall.

Drapery Panel Wonderland!

This is how our Drapery panel section used to look. It was a striking display, but too inefficient to carry our expanding SKUs.

We recently expanded our ready made, drapery panel section. We now have linen and poly panels to go with our massive selection of silk taffeta and silk dupioni. Early response has been great. As much as we loved the visual appeal of our drapes hanging from chain iron bars, we had to develop a more efficient way to merchandise our ever growing inventory.

The great thing about our silk drapery panels is they are lined and interlined. When you feel the panel, the weight is really substantial. So when you hang up the curtain, you are going to get this luxurious flowing effect. Hopefully, you should see some our new pieces on the web sooner, than later.

We've got about 15 color ways in the silk dupioni drapery panels. If that's not enough, you can do custom drapes with any of our 2,000 silk fabrics.

Silk taffetas give off a beautiful sheen!

Here is our new linen drapery panel section.

Our panels are lined and interlined.

These panels are real thick and substantial making for a luxurious hang.

Too many choices can be a bad thing.

Care for a Spot of Tea?

Hearing the words "Tea Party" brings three things to mind: The city of Boston, Alice in Wonderland, and beautiful china teacups. Teacups are the one thing I display all the time whether they are being used for tea or not. They hold my jewelry, I toss those extra buttons that come with clothes into them, and they serve as candy bowls when guests come over. They're not so much about function for me, and a piece of table art. Keeping that in mind, here are some gorgeous teacups (and pots!) I've found lately...
Royal Copenhagen really does make tabletop art. These are exquisite.
I'm so glad Missoni moved their iconic prints to china. What a perfect centerpiece this teapot would make!

The ombre saucer looks fantastic with the bright floral cup. I think I have a place for you right on my coffee table... Margherita by Missoni.

My friend and coworker, Jennifer, got some of the Lenox "Chirp" pattern for her wedding. Isn't it cute and Springy?

Kate Spade can do no wrong. This is heavenly!

I would fill this Vera Wang teapot with a tight bunch of peonies and set it on my dining table. Tres romantique!

I can always count on Anthropologie for cute, inexpensive teacups. A pop of color with gold accents is just what I need/want.

My Grown-Up Easter Basket

My, my, my... Is it already Easter time? Where is this year going? Before you know it, I'll be writing about everything summer!
Easter is one of my favorite times of year. It always seems like an appropriate time for new beginnings. Everything is bright and new. I have an excuse to buy a pretty new dress. Not to mention Easter baskets- always a good thing to wake up to as a kid. Alas, I'm too old for Easter baskets these days (I doubt my mom will get up early to leave one on the doorstep of my apartment), but that doesn't mean I can't dream. If I were going to stock my very own Easter basket these days, here's what I would fill it with...

Row One: J. Crew Fringed Linen Scarf in natural (the perfect summer scarf!), $49.50; UK Flag Notecards from MadeByGirl (because I love sending little notes from time to time), $11 for four; Tree of Life Necklace from Anthropologie (I fell in LOVE with this!), $58.

Row Two: Tarte Natural Beauty Cheek Stain at Sephora (because I prefer to fake my sun exposure), $28; Lady Gaga: The Fame at Borders (her songs always get me pumped to start the day), about $13; Kate Spade Jane Street Debra Organizer in Chocolate/Pink (because life is so much better when it's organized!), $165.

Row Three: Godiva Cherry Cordials (I had to have something sweet! It's an Easter Basket!), $10 for nine; Victorian Antique Gold Rose Filigree Ring from edmdesigns on Etsy (AMAZING and made from vintage watch parts), $65; Nine West Snooks Heels in Ivory Natural Leather (A little bit bondage with a little bit sweet), $89.

Row Four: Coach S Charm (so everybody knows who's keys those are), $30; Eveline Tarunadjaja Wallet from Poketo (we just got these in the store and I want one!), $20; Tory Burch Straw Saddle Jane Tote in Natural/Hibiscus Pink (because I need something to use as a basket), $365.

Green Roofs in NYC: Inhabitat

The Next Big Architecture Trend...

We looked at doing a green roof for High Fashion Home. It's not in the budget currently, but it's definitely in the cards when our roof needs to be replaced. A green roof helps reduce maintenance and energy costs, provides sound insulation and amenity space, and improves air quality.

Ten Arquitectos is designing a mixed use project called Clinton Park, which will incorporate an elaborate green roof design. New York is an incredibly dense city, so any additional green space helps soften their urban grid. In case you never been to the NYC in the summer, it's pretty hot with all the concrete trapping the heat.

Check out the spectactular pictures courtesy of Inhabitat:

Every city is looking to add more green space.

The green roof adds a different dimension to the usual urban skyline.

The step down architectural feature adds to the drama.

Oh-range!

I'm a big fan of orange. It's not as primary as red, and not nearly as feminine as pink. I think of it as a very guy-friendly pop of color, which is why it's showing up pretty regularly in my apartment. It's also a very fun color to wear since it gets noticed! Get citrus-ey this Spring!

Under the Disco Ball

Put on your dancing shoes because you might find yourself facing a disco ball- in the bathroom (or the fireplace, or a jacket). Mirrored tile is making its way into some very unlikely places. It's fun and glamorous, and we're all a bit vain, so it works. Here are some of my favorite random uses of mirror...

Forget the standard trim... add a reflective surface instead. via Elle Decor

Confessions of Shopaholics

Isn't Spring the cliche time to get something new and great? I suppose it goes back to getting a fancy new Easter dress as a kid, but I always get shopping pangs around this time of year. The weather is warming up, it's nice to go outside to get to the shops, and the shock of holiday spending has faded from memory. With that in mind, I asked some of my very stylish friends one simple question:

If you could splurge on one thing this month, what would you get?

I didn't place any limits on them. Anything, any price, anywhere. Here's what they said...

My friend Stephanie is finishing up her last year in college, so her desire to splurge on a beach vacation makes perfect sense. Finally, a chance to relax without a textbook in sight!

Marian is the lady with the shoes (or Choos, really). So I was actually surprised when she said she wanted a brightly colored handbag for Spring! Of course, when you're talking about Valentino, I would forget about shoes, too.

My very stylish interior designer friend, Kelley, just bought a home in the Heights. Needless to say, she's in a decorating frenzy, but the one thing she wants more than anything is artwork a la this print from 20x200.

Perhaps the most extravegant request came from my boss, Jeff. His major splurge? A drum set. Well, Jeff, I hope your neighbors are heavy sleepers.

If you want shopping advice, you go to Cynthia. She has impeccable style (and she's an amazing artist. I have a mini-gallery of her work in my apartment). She was very specific about what she wanted: A pair of tough heels to rock out all of her flirty skirts.

I suppose a lot of my friends love shoes. I lived in New York with a shoe-aholic named Allyson. Everytime she came home with a new pair of shoes, I would literally drool. I wasn't surprised to hear she wanted a new pair of Manolo Blahniks for Spring.

My friend Amber is also on a decorating binge, but she's looking for a very specific coffee table. She wanted something "solid and thick with a natural look, nicks and all". I'd say the Beam Coffee Table fits the bill.

My coworker friend, Jennifer, is dying to redo her kitchen. She picked this one from Domino as her inspiration because she liked the combination of open shelving and closed cabinets.

I couldn't forget to put in my two cents. I'm lusting after the Dulce Sequin Skirt from J. Crew. Paired with a slouchy t-shirt and some leather flip-flops, it's the perfect summer night out outfit!

Sweep Me Off To Paris!

Something about a summer in Paris is really appealing to me right now. Maybe it's the dreary, rainy weather we're having in Houston. Maybe it's the small and architecture-free apartment I've been in for close to two years. Maybe it's the constant reminder of our declining economy from TV to radio and magazines that's finally getting me down. Either way, I need a vacation, and a trip to Paris would be just lover-ly.

via Domino
Of course, that involves quite a bit of funding that I just don't have at the moment. I'll have to make do with these Parisian (and faux- Parisian) interiors which are tickling my French fancy.

via Domino
Apparently, the ingredients for a Parisian interior are as follows: 3 parts chevron patterned wooden floor, 1 part ornate fireplace with large mirror overhead, 2 parts French doors with balcony and iron railing, 1 part simple floor-to-ceiling drapes. Voila!

via Domino
Until I can cross the pond and get over there, I'll be dreaming of French architecture, French fashion, and (my favorite) French crepes! Au revoir!

This Just In!

I'm feeling like a kid in a candy store! A snippet of the amazing new fabrics we have...
These would look wonderful on my sofa... Reversible Horizon 9 Pillow, $46.50.

Last week, we received some delightfully spring-y fabrics by Amy Butler in our store. Whimsical prints! Unapologetically bold colors! Perfect for recovery from a dreary, gray winter! And the fun doesn't stop there...

Please send to me one of these Round Serving Bowls, posthaste!

You may wrap it in this medley of gift wraps. What a cheerful way to receive a gift!

If you do, I'll send you a thank you note on the Lucky Flowers Mix & Match Stationery.

Still Loving Suzani!

Elle Decor had a little suzani on it's cover. Love the sofa!

I'd love to add some suzani to my living room. Beautiful, colorful fabrics add a touch of bohemian to even the most classic room. The patterns are so gorgeous that just a little bit will go a long way. Suzani has been in for a couple of years now, but it doesn't show any signs of leaving, so grab a little bit where you can!

Carolina Herrera, Jr. obviously has a thing for Suzani. She used it on a table in one home for Domino and as drapes for another home in Vogue Living.

La, La, La, Lavender!

I went shopping at the Houston Galleria last Sunday (and bumped into my sister-in-law and boss! Apparently it was a day to shop!). I noticed a very prominent theme. There was lavender everywhere! It wasn't a dull shade of mauve either- it was a beautiful, rosy shade of lilac. A shade that brightens up the skin from a long, dark winter and boosts you into summer. Paired with other bright shades, it loses the saccharin, and gains some sexy.

Twisted Puff Sleeve Shirt from Gap, $18; Dinah Sandals by Cynthia Vincent at Piperlime, $200; Python Clutch from J. Crew, $495; Maharajah Earrings by Dori Csengeri at Charm & Chain, $412; Carpathia Sky Wide-Leg Pants from Anthropologie, $50; Photo from Domino.

Even furniture manufacturers are jumping on the voilet bandwagon. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams introduced a rich shade in leather for this season. Imagine a classic leather wingback in purple! This is a trend I am loving!

Sleep Tight

I'd never given it much thought before, but I love the look of upholstered headboards. They give the bedroom a certain softness that a big piece of wood can't. I've been surfing the Domino website a lot lately, pulling inspiration photos before they shut down, and I found a lot of headboard eye candy...

Grey moire and navy floral- calm and collected. Check out the ceiling, too!

Is calm isn't your thing, there is always fiery hot pink!

I love the sweet, classic shape of these headboards, and I love the throw pillows they put with them!

Sometimes, more is more.

I think neutrals are beautiful. You don't have to feel bad for not using a lot of color!

Headboards are a great place to use a big pattern because you know it will be seen.

A lot of amazing pattern going on in this bed.

I saved my favorite for last. It's a headboard fit for a queen... quite regal, no?

Bring Back the Cold!

I think the only thing I'll miss about winter is being able to look completely chic just by throwing on a wool trenchcoat and some long gloves. Can't do that in shorts and a tank top! Well, until next winter, my coat will be retired to the back of the closet. Sigh...

Celebrity Apprentice: Back and Louder than Ever!

Donald Trump knows style!?!?

The pink tie guy is back, and the show is becoming ridiculously, more funny by the second. When you have a cast of characters like Dennis Rodman, Clint Black, Scott Hamilton, Joan and Melissa Rivers, Hershel Walker, Andrew Dice Clay, Tom Green, and some random model that opens the briefcases from Deal or No Deal, you know the entertainment quotient is going to be quite high. On Sunday night's episode, Tony Hseih, CEO of Zappos, got grilled by the girl's team on his dating preferences. I have no idea what that had to do with their assignment, but it makes for good, awkward TV.

Anyways, one of the best things about the show is the interior design of the suites. Every year, they manage to do a great job of decking out the rooms with latest and greatest from the home fashion world.

I (Still) Love Lucite!

An Aitali chair from the pages of Metropolitan Home

Just to prove that lucite is in it for the longhaul, I've collected some inspirations as evidence. It's come a long way from little end tables. Add some fabric and you've got futuristic furniture with warmth. With the added benefit that lucite goes with everything!
At first glance, I wondered what was holding up these chairs! More from Met Home.

From Houston magazine, Lulu-fabric-covered chairs from Elloise Abbott.

Another Aitali chair- lots of options!

Mmmmmm...Missoni fabric on a Kartell chair. From House Beautiful.

Versailles Style

In honor of the Houston Ballet's production of Marie (which I will be seeing on Friday!), I've put together a collage inspired by that spoiled French party girl, Marie Antoinette. Pop open a bottle of your finest champagne, don your fancy ball gown, and let them eat cake!*

*I know, I know. She didn't actually say that, but it makes for such lovely commentary.

From top left, clockwise: Melody Herrera stars as the child queen in the Houston Ballet's Marie; Embellish your bouffant with a feathery adornment from ban.do; Kirsten Dunst in Sofia Coppola's rendition of Marie Antoinette. Such extravegance all around!; Amazing Versailles inspired photography from Jimmy Backius; As long as you're imitating the ultimate spender, indulge in some Louboutins; A shot of Marie's shoes from the movie, not a plain one in sight!; If Marie Antoinette had lived today, she would have worn Dior.

Pompidou Museum

I had the pleasure of being in Paris this past December. For the first time, I visited the Pompidou Museum. Granted, I only spent 45 minutes there before I had to catch the plane back to London. It's definitely on my must-see list the next time around where I'll spend considerably more time exploring.

The outside is a mixed bag architecturally. I can't help but feel that Houston's own George R. Brown Convention Center took some design cues from here.

This place is huge!

Looks like random abstract art, until you take a look through a peep hole with a direct view. All the sudden you can see the shape of an eye, which was a very cool surprise.

Wow. I'm not sure if I want to sit in it or give it a hug.

Shiny...

Shiny part II.

Reminds me of a egg slicer. A very stunning egg slicer at that.

I'm not sure about the comfort, but it looks cool!

A lot of the pieces in this wing of the museum sit on rotating platforms. It adds to the dramatic effect.

I guess in a weird way, I can picture this as a futuristic seesaw.

Not sure what to make of this, but it does look impressive in person.

It's unbelievable how creative people can be.

Silver Belles

It's great to have beautiful silver flatware, but to be honest, it just doesn't get enough face time. I think it's time for fancy silverware to get more exposure, and, it seems, others agree with me.

All the elegance with none of the upkeep... Grain de Couleur Couverts Tea Towel (also comes in fork or knife designs), $39 @ The Conran Shop.

I adore this chandelier for a breakfast nook. So country chic! Even better, it's made of vintage silverware. The appropriately named Eat, Drink, and Be Merry Chandelier, $4800 @ Anthropologie.

The It List: Our Editor's Top Furniture Picks!

Our own Design Guru has spoken. We even created an entire area on our website for his favorite furniture pieces. Here are his exclusive top furniture picks:

The Suzanne Chair: This luxurious green leather chair is a sure fire, attention-getter. It sits like heaven and has looks that kill. It's $799 for a top grain leather chair!

The Cassini Cabinet: Black and White stripes are very hot right now. There is a Beatlejuice-esque coolness to this designer piece.

The Angelina Sofa: First off it's $899, which is a great price for this stylish, eco-friendly sofa. Tight seat, tight back sofas tend to be less than comfortable. But the Angelina is definitely the exception and not the rule.
