I've Been So Distant...

A thousand apologies for my extended absence! I promise I have a good reason. The powers-that-be at work seem to think I'm worthy of more responsibilities. So, for the past two weeks, I've been learning the ropes of a new position. Now that I'm getting a grip on it, I can take a moment to post something new! What better to pull me away from the paperwork than Stella McCartney's much talked about collection for Gap?

There are some really amazing standout pieces (see below), but most of the pieces are incredibly wearable like the sweaters and leggings.

Is the Band Jacket an ode to her uber-famous father? And I love, love, love the Flower Applique Dress!

Give this tutu to the little princess in your life. I know of a few nieces who would love this kind of thing!

In My Mailbox

Whoever does the styling for Anthropologie is a sartorial genius! Every issue of the catalog is such a great source of inspiration for me, and this month's was no exception. Some very lovely things caught my eye...

Bespeckled tights for chilly days on page 27...

A vibrantly colored rug on page 24...

Plates to bring out your inner Picasso on page 21...

Perfectly ladylike boots with a bow on page 6...

Thank you, Anthropologie. I had an inspiring morning!

These Boots Were Made For Walkin'

I've been on the search for a tall flat boot practically since I came to be. The day after I started walking was when I started looking for that boot. Needless to say, it's been a long, tough road. This year, I am determined to find that perfect pair.
I like the distressing on these Vintage Tall Roadster Boots from J. Crew, but I wish it had a couple more buckles to make things interesting.
The Thebna Boot from Nine West has the details I desire, but I'm not sure I'm sold on the color.

I absolutely LOVE this boot from Chloe. Refined gold buckle, great leather, cool heel, but $1,100?! I'd prefer to stay married, thankyouverymuch.

Another classic boot, this time the Isabelline Riding Boot by Ralph Lauren, but it's a bit too classic for my taste. Oh, and it's close to $1000, too. Let's see... Boots or food for two months?

These Jenny Boots from Piperlime are a close competitor. I like the style and the buckles and the color, but I wish they were more distressed.

I think I found a winner! They Cranberry Bog Boots from Anthropologie are nicely worn in (but not worn out). The color is nice and neutral but interesting. The toggle makes for a cool detail. They'd look fantastic with jeans. And the price? I won't be buying them for myself, but maybe I'll put them on my Christmas list. And if I don't get them, I know what I'll be writing about next year!

Furniture vs. Fashion: Naptime

We spent one-third of our lives in bed, so surely the piece of furniture on which we rest says something about us. And wouldn't you know it, a bed screams your style as much as, well, you.

Call me crazy, but I fell in love with this simple silhouette as soon as it arrived in our store. The Paul Bed is a perfectly tailored shape paired with a luxurious fabric, and that equals simple style. And who else knows simple? Calvin Klein, hands down. I also love Doo.Ri's elegant, simple shift.

***

Ever long to be from another time? Remember the days when ladies dressed up to do errands? Behnaz Sarafpour and Rachel Roy do. And Anthropologie is making antique style new again with their Italian Campaign Canopy Bed. Bellissima.

***
Nothing Martha Stewart does is ever sloppy. She is the Queen of Put-Together and the Irvington Nickel Bed is no exception. The same is true of Michael Kors (King of the Jet-Setters) and Ralph Lauren (King of the Ivy Leaguers).

***

Just because you're a girl doesn't mean you want to parade around in ruffles and flowers all the time. Masculine touches counter your sweet temperament. Casamidy's Altavista Leather Headboard is just the right amount of masculine with woven leather in a boxy shape. For your wardrobe, there's a leather trench from 3.1 Phillip Lim or a trendier boyfriend jacket from Antonio Berardi.

***

Or perhaps you shun all things manly, preferring to look the part of the girly-girl you are. Hey, it's your life. In that case, I'd curl up on the Helena Bed from Oly Studio with its carved, whitewashed wood frame, raffia upholstery, and antiqued nailheads. Throw on, what else?, a dress from Derek Lam or Christopher Kane and take on the world.

Inbox Love

I get a ton of junk mail. My morning routine includes hitting the delete button about 50 times because I HATE having mail stack up in my inbox. Something made me open this email and when I did, I was happy. Look at what I found!

Zipper Pencil Skirt, $89

It's RACHEL Rachel Roy, a bridge line of very cool, reasonably priced designer duds! I am in big trouble...

Transfourmer Coat, $189

Nothing will ship until early October, but think of it this way: When it arrives, it'll feel like an unexpected present!

I think this is my favorite. It's sexy, but not grotesque. It'd be perfect for a fashionista party!

Seriously! All of the prices are SO GOOD! The most expensive thing is $249 for a leather jacket. Not. Too. Shabby.
Tres Balmain without the exorbitant price tag. Well played. Anyways, you can get your hands on this stuff at RachelRoy.com or Macy's. So, um, hop to it!

Getting Dress-ed

I'm obsessed with finding cute dresses right now. (Oddly, I wasn't obsessed with it at the beginning of the summer, which is prime dress season!) There's the "Throw-it-on-and-go" appeal, and also the "Looking-dressy-with-little-effort" aspect. My main qualifications are as follows: 1. It must be comfortable 2. It must look dressier than it is 3. It must have sleeves because with the A/C on full blast everywhere you go, it can get a bit chilly here. Here are my finds for every occasion:
For shopping in the Heights: This dress is the perfect mixture of boho and polish. Silk Paisley Dress in True Navy, $98 @ Banana Republic.
For a fancy dinner (or for one of the thousand weddings coming up!): J. Crew has the BEST chic cocktail dresses for good prices. I bought a black strapless number a few years ago and it has served me well, but I keep ogling this adorable wrap dress. Fun fact: I let my bridesmaids pick out their own J. Crew dresses for my wedding and big sis was thisclose to getting this one, but, alas, when she went to order it, they didn't have her size in stock! Boo. Okay, that was a lot of commentary for one dress, but, what can I say? I really like it. Silk Taffeta Ruffle Wrap Dress in Light Pewter, $175 @ J. Crew.

For days when I'm feeling particularly High-Fashion-y: I love mixing prints on dresses. It makes me look creative, even if I'm not. Orpheous Dress in Orange Multi, $1,395 by Duro Olowu @ Barneys Co-op.

For work: Simple is always practical for work and the sash flatters waists. Button Duo Dress in Blue, $168 @ Anthropologie.

For a party! Dare I say, this is my favorite? For one, it looks incredibly comfortable and universally flattering. Also, the chain detail is awesomely tough because I'm a closeted biker chick. Bowery Dress in Shadow, $595 by Catherine Malandrino @ ShopBop.

I've never been a big fan of animal prints, but when they're done in lively color, well, I can change my mind...

A Plethora of Peacocks

That may be, but beauty can really boost your mood sometimes. A burst of color from a peacock feather is just what is needed for a simple, neutral room.

So Charming

Pile it on! Get your hands on them at Generate Design

It's about time! I can't think of a more perfect designer to create dainty 18 karat gold charms than the legendary Tord Boontje! Here's the cool part- the charms are packaged in three's. Once they're in your greedy little hands, you can do anything you desire with them. Turn them into earrings, get all four sets and make a killer necklace, or just wear one at a time. And, at only $39 per set, they make a great gift for that design junkie friend of yours (i.e. me).

From left: Package One, Three, Four, and Two and a stylish serving suggestion.

This is more my style. Package Two is my favorite. The deer reminds me of the ones I see on morning runs when the weather is cooler.

On The Chain Gang

Forget about that sweet, delicate chain with a little bird charm hanging off of it. The chains right now are all about more, more, more. And they are tough as nails.

Litter SF makes punk appropriate shoe jewelry to toughen up your existing stilletos. Add that to your night out. Walk the Plank Shoe Jewelry, $98.

Givenchy built the chains straight into the dress in Fall 2008.

The designs from Gemma Redux are filled with chains. Which to choose, which to choose... Carolyn Bracelet, $272.

Armor (via Etsy) is creating amazing body jewelry with varying styles and widths of chain. Tell me this wouldn't look incredibly sexy with a backless top. Rei, $200.

Even porcelain is getting a badass makeover. Bowl by Sarah Cihat with chainwork by Michael Miller.

Cha-Cha-Chartreuse

I suppose I'm slightly biased. I even like to say the word chartreuse. It rolls off the tongue so nicely. Chartreuse.

It's a good thing the color itself can back up all the hype I'm giving it. It's punchy yellow with an undertone of green. Sounds like a winning combination to me. Perhaps you should try some on this summer...

I like the unexpected pop of chartreuse behind the striped pillows. Loverly! Photo via Domino (r.i.p.).

I kind of want to buy this clock. I'm trying to resist the urge! Innermost Eclipse Clock, $184 @ High Fashion Home.

The company is my new obsession. There will be further posts on Casamidy, but for now, you can enjoy the Almidi Arch Table. It can be painted in any Benjamin Moore color!

I fell in love with this Rory Beca top that I found in Lucky. So swingy and airy for a summer night out.

Just a Little Bit

A little neon goes a long way. I'd say we learned that the hard way in the early 90's. A lot of horrendous Fresh Prince of Belair outfits come to mind... Luckily, when you pair a bit of neon with neutrals, it comes off as fun, not tragic. Observe:

Let's start at the beginning. This is the moment when my neon obsession began. Suede used hot pink eyelashes on his model during the last season of Project Runway. I. Loved. It. (P.S. The new season starts August 20th on Lifetime. I can't wait!)

It's very Mad Men meets the 80's where the very classic pump sports a neon yellow toe. Well played, Michael Kors.

This is why I love J. Crew. I can get in on the action without going completely broke. Claire Neon-Trimmed Leather Ballet Flats in British Khaki, $148.

It's no surprise that Matthew Williamson would get in on the neon trend. His collections are some of the most vibrantly colored ones I've ever seen!

It's A Cruel Summer

I don't know if you noticed, but it's REALLY hot outside. As in, triple-digit hot. Let's just say I'd like to be as bare as possible when facing the great outdoors. At this point, if I could walk around all day in a swimsuit, I would. I imagine my week would look something like this:

Monday: They say red is the best color for board meetings because it conveys power. Does that mean the little heart print conveys a love of power? Let's go with "yes". Victoria's Secret T-Cutout Monokini, on sale at $29.50.

Tuesday: Something sophisticated is needed for the annual review. Could I get some Louboutins for a dash of color? J. Crew Jersey Lomellina Ruched Tank, $115.

Wednesday: A black string bikini is as classic for swimwear as a Chanel suit is for couture (right?). This will work perfectly for a business dinner to woo a new client. Gap Essential String Bikini Top & Bottom (sold separately).

Thursday: Company Happy Hour at 4! It's time to have some fun! Athleta Pop Art Splice Tankini, $69.

Friday: It's the end of the week! Put on something pretty to motivate you through the paperwork and push you on to the weekend. Anthropologie Chinaberry Grove Bandeau & Bottoms (sold separately), $78 each.
If that's what we're wearing to work, imagine the weekends!

HF Weekly Obsession: For the Ladies

We're adding another facet to our little midtown store: boutique. The entire first floor has been transformed with the arrival of a few very cool and comfortable lines of woman's clothing. We've even added a fitting room (a project that was tackled exceptionally by Cynthia, our store's displayer.)!
We're slowly bringing in new lines of tees, dresses, and pants for your shopping pleasure.
I love these easy, simple dresses from Dolan. I don't care how cute something is if it isn't comfy, but these feel as good as they look. We've got this dress in purple and a funky tie-dye.

Woman cannot live in dresses alone. On weekends, hoodies are key, and one with interesting details keeps you from that rolled-out-of-bed look (even if you did just roll out of bed). Try one from Splendid, the masters of comfort. We've got the one above in sunny yellow!

I think these satin harem pants from Maggie Ward are so cool. They're as light as air, so when you pair them with dressy heels and a simple top, you'll feel just like Lady Gaga (you know, sans pants).

There are only so many ways you can do a white tee, but I love the slouchy pocket on this one from K. Allyn. It's a white tee, but fashionized. Get yours here.

For the 80's teen that's all grown up, put your kid in a tee from Small Audience. The tees are vintage styled with cheeky phrases that adults can appreciate. Give us a call for more information.

How adorable are these for your little rocker-in-training? Not only are they badass, Me In Mind makes it easy to put on fidgety kids' feet. Give us a call for more information.

These are perfect for the summertime water baby. Put a mermaid on your teeny mermaid! Take your pick of Harajuku Lovers styles here.

A Touch of Goth

I figure anytime a new Twilight trailer comes out, people will embrace their inner vampire and goth it up a bit. I'm liking the loads of black lace in fashion and design right now. It's just enough to make Edward Cullen do a double-take...

...Especially if you were sporting Stella McCartney like Liv Tyler at the Time 100 or Kate Bosworth at the Met Ball!

Now, that's what one would call "Sex on Legs". Lace Stilettos by Coppelia Pique.

Goth for beginners: Free People "Lacey Insert Blouse", $98 at 80's Purple.

Throw a midnight party with this as the centerpiece. Come Rain, Come Shine Chandelier in Black by Tord Boontje.

Chanel always nails the look... even for Spring.

Add a dash of goth to your packages with Lace Tape in black, $10 at Matter.

Tiers of Joy!

Ruffles and Summer go together like me and Starbucks: best of friends. Ever since I blogged about this jacket from Anthropologie...

...back in January, I've been hooked on tiered sleeves. Since then, it seems like I've seen them all over the place.

For instance, Daniella whipped up this tiered coat for The Fashion Show (I am hooked.)...

Then, I spied this Moschino trench within the pages of Marie Claire...

What a shame! It's 2900 bucks. Oh well, scrap that one. I also spied this Anna Sui jacket with little mini ruffled sleeved at ShopBop.

On sale for $300?! Still pricey, but more my speed.
Please, oh please, say that tiers are here to stay!

I Love the 80's: Neon

To kick off my homage to the resurgence of all things 80's (gasp!), I've collected a few neon treasures that I'd love to sport. I'm not going full on bright with an outfit of neon Units (oh, yeah! Remember those?!), but I could rock a neon necklace with a black dress. The 80's is back... take it in small doses.

Fashion vs. Furniture: The Poolside Edition

How time gets away from me! I haven't written one of these since February! I'd say it's about time, eh?

This time around, the pool, and the cocktails that surround them, was my inspiration. I've paired an outdoor party theme with a signature drink and added a dash of fashion to bring a little summer to our little blog. Enjoy!

P.S. As you can see, I had a bit of fun with Poladroid. It's awesome!

I know Cinco de Mayo is in the past, but that's no reason not to throw an improptu fiesta en la playa! Serve up some top notch maragaritas and sport a bright patterned suit by Emilio Pucci.

How about a sweet garden party complete with colorful butterflies and chic hats? Serve your guests a twist on a classic with a Peach Julep, and up the sugar factor in a floral maillot by Badgley Mischka.

You can't not celebrate Independence Day! And just watching the Will Smith flick doesn't count. In addition to burgers and barbeque, whip up a colorful beverage in your star-spangled suit by Michael Kors.

Key To My <3

I love the new Tiffany & Co. keys collection. They're exquisite for sure. But the smallest one is 250 bucks, and that's a little beyond my budget right now. I might not be able to afford diamonds, but I can afford Etsy. Going with the skeleton key theme, I found several cute necklaces with vintage style that will satisfy my need for keys...

This one's my favorite! Skeleton Key & Aventurine Necklace from Jeweled Ambrosia, $26.

I'm in love...

With the arrival of Spring, we see the departure of the crisp, tailored looks of winter, and usher in a flowy, casual aesthetic. Flip-Flopping

Well, the weather is officially getting warm, which means only one thing: It's time to break out the flip-flops! To be honest, I pretty much wear them year-round. It doesn't get very cold here and they're oh-so-comfy. The only difference is that now, people don't tell me I'm going to get frostbite.

In hot climates, flip-flops are the go-to shoe. You need them for day, night, weekend, casual, dressy, you name it. I absolutely live in them! I've been scouting out new pairs to add to my collection...

Here are my top picks, some realistic, some only in my dreams!
Row One: Loeffler Randall "Sydney" in Dark Navy, $450 at Barney's Co-op; Tory Burch "Logo Flat Thong" in Hibiscus Pink, $195 at Neiman Marcus; Bandolino "Claribell" in Dark Green, $59.
Row Two: Por la Victoire "Ella" in Rose, $215 at Piperlime; J. Crew "Dauphine" in Neon Yellow, $88; Old Navy "Beaded Thong Sandals" in Multi, $14.50.

My Grown-Up Easter Basket

My, my, my... Is it already Easter time? Where is this year going? Before you know it, I'll be writing about everything summer!
Easter is one of my favorite times of year. It always seems like an appropriate time for new beginnings. Everything is bright and new. I have an excuse to buy a pretty new dress. Not to mention Easter baskets- always a good thing to wake up to as a kid. Alas, I'm too old for Easter baskets these days (I doubt my mom will get up early to leave one on the doorstep of my apartment), but that doesn't mean I can't dream. If I were going to stock my very own Easter basket these days, here's what I would fill it with...

Row One: J. Crew Fringed Linen Scarf in natural (the perfect summer scarf!), $49.50; UK Flag Notecards from MadeByGirl (because I love sending little notes from time to time), $11 for four; Tree of Life Necklace from Anthropologie (I fell in LOVE with this!), $58.

Row Two: Tarte Natural Beauty Cheek Stain at Sephora (because I prefer to fake my sun exposure), $28; Lady Gaga: The Fame at Borders (her songs always get me pumped to start the day), about $13; Kate Spade Jane Street Debra Organizer in Chocolate/Pink (because life is so much better when it's organized!), $165.

Row Three: Godiva Cherry Cordials (I had to have something sweet! It's an Easter Basket!), $10 for nine; Victorian Antique Gold Rose Filigree Ring from edmdesigns on Etsy (AMAZING and made from vintage watch parts), $65; Nine West Snooks Heels in Ivory Natural Leather (A little bit bondage with a little bit sweet), $89.

Row Four: Coach S Charm (so everybody knows who's keys those are), $30; Eveline Tarunadjaja Wallet from Poketo (we just got these in the store and I want one!), $20; Tory Burch Straw Saddle Jane Tote in Natural/Hibiscus Pink (because I need something to use as a basket), $365.

Oh-range!

I'm a big fan of orange. It's not as primary as red, and not nearly as feminine as pink. I think of it as a very guy-friendly pop of color, which is why it's showing up pretty regularly in my apartment. It's also a very fun color to wear since it gets noticed! Get citrus-ey this Spring!

Under the Disco Ball

Put on your dancing shoes because you might find yourself facing a disco ball- in the bathroom (or the fireplace, or a jacket). Mirrored tile is making its way into some very unlikely places. It's fun and glamorous, and we're all a bit vain, so it works. Here are some of my favorite random uses of mirror...

Shiny mirror tile + Earthy wood counter = Eclectic perfection. via Elle Decor

Teatime just got a whole lot badass-ier. via Elle Decor

Forget the standard trim... add a reflective surface instead. via Elle Decor

Confessions of Shopaholics

Isn't Spring the cliche time to get something new and great? I suppose it goes back to getting a fancy new Easter dress as a kid, but I always get shopping pangs around this time of year. The weather is warming up, it's nice to go outside to get to the shops, and the shock of holiday spending has faded from memory. With that in mind, I asked some of my very stylish friends one simple question:

If you could splurge on one thing this month, what would you get?

I didn't place any limits on them. Anything, any price, anywhere. Here's what they said...

My friend Stephanie is finishing up her last year in college, so her desire to splurge on a beach vacation makes perfect sense. Finally, a chance to relax without a textbook in sight!

Marian is the lady with the shoes (or Choos, really). So I was actually surprised when she said she wanted a brightly colored handbag for Spring! Of course, when you're talking about Valentino, I would forget about shoes, too.

My very stylish interior designer friend, Kelley, just bought a home in the Heights. Needless to say, she's in a decorating frenzy, but the one thing she wants more than anything is artwork a la this print from 20x200.

Perhaps the most extravegant request came from my boss, Jeff. His major splurge? A drum set. Well, Jeff, I hope your neighbors are heavy sleepers.

If you want shopping advice, you go to Cynthia. She has impeccable style (and she's an amazing artist. I have a mini-gallery of her work in my apartment). She was very specific about what she wanted: A pair of tough heels to rock out all of her flirty skirts.

I suppose a lot of my friends love shoes. I lived in New York with a shoe-aholic named Allyson. Everytime she came home with a new pair of shoes, I would literally drool. I wasn't surprised to hear she wanted a new pair of Manolo Blahniks for Spring.

My friend Amber is also on a decorating binge, but she's looking for a very specific coffee table. She wanted something "solid and thick with a natural look, nicks and all". I'd say the Beam Coffee Table fits the bill.

My coworker friend, Jennifer, is dying to redo her kitchen. She picked this one from Domino as her inspiration because she liked the combination of open shelving and closed cabinets.

I couldn't forget to put in my two cents. I'm lusting after the Dulce Sequin Skirt from J. Crew. Paired with a slouchy t-shirt and some leather flip-flops, it's the perfect summer night out outfit!

Bring Back the Cold!

I think the only thing I'll miss about winter is being able to look completely chic just by throwing on a wool trenchcoat and some long gloves. Can't do that in shorts and a tank top! Well, until next winter, my coat will be retired to the back of the closet. Sigh...

Silver Birch

Before I wrapped my Christmas gifts, I went on a mad search for wrapping paper printed with birch trees. Pottery Barn displayed gifts that way and it was so chic I had to have it! Alas, I didn't get my wish, but I have seen a ton of birch print since then. Maybe it's because I'm actually looking for it now. Yes, it's quite wintery and we are heading into Spring, but it's pretty nonetheless.

It's only fitting for a duvet printed with nature to be organic. Birch Tree Organic Duvet Cover & Sham at Pottery Barn.

I'm Seeing A Pattern...

I love these eye-catching pumps from Dries Van Noten's Spring '08 collection. A-Mazing!
It takes a certain eye to be able to combine patterns that to the untrained eye look nothing alike. I may not have that skill, but I think these pattern combinations may inspire me to try sometime!

Love the varying patterns on these dining chairs. Very eclectic! (I can't remember where this photo came from. If anyone knows please tell me!)
Again, don't remember the source for this, but the combination of patterns is fantastic!

I couldn't pick just one pair of Dries Van Noten shoes, so I added all of my faves! Aren't they stunning? I wish I had a pair (or three)!

Anthropologie is jumping on the pattern bandwagon with their Terai Chairs.

Fashion vs. Furniture: The Resort Edition

In honor of the trip to Mexico my husband and I are taking at the end of this month, I thought I'd do another edition of my favorite blog. It's inspired by the Resort '09 collections and the absolute staple piece of relaxing furniture: the chaise. Just like any other piece, it's comes in many shapes, sizes, and styles. Here are just a few...

Isn't it sweet? The Hanna Daybed is everything a girly girl needs for a midday beauty nap. It doesn't spare on the details either- carved wood legs, tufted cushions, rolled pillows. Christian Dior pairs up quite nicely- ladylike prints, a sweet cardigan, and prim heels.

In order to tone down the sugar, the Lasair Lounge ups the bold factor in a statement-making pony print. Who else to complement it than a designer known for prints? Gucci can certainly hold its own.
This sparse Jonathan Leather Lounge is still luxurious and fit for a goddess (which is exactly the image this chaise conjures). Couldn't you imagine laying across this lounge in a Grecian gown by Alberta Ferretti eating grapes? It's your own personal Mount Olympus.
The Monaco Leather Chaise is the perfect timeless chaise to go anywhere and do anything for you (short of doing your laundry). It's so versatile, it can work anywhere you need it to! Now that's what I call getting your money's worth. Think of this Isaac Mizrahi dress in the same way. Dress it up, dress it down, take it to work, to dinner, to any place around town. A very smart buy.

Sometimes you just need something basic. No wild prints, no frills, no embellishments. Just a well made, simple, neutral piece. The Clifton Lounge certainly fills that hole, and Calvin Klein built his career on simplicity. When it works, it works!

Of course, sometimes you want something with a little sex appeal. Curves are universally appealing, whether it's a woman in Versace or the Earl Chaise. They don't say, "If you've got it, flaunt it" for nothing!

The (Not So) Secret Garden

Florals and butterflies were a major theme in fashion for the Spring season. Pair that with bright colors and you've got yourself a bona fide garden party! Fashion and interiors frequently mirror each other, so let's take a look at how the two are intersecting...

From left: Collette Dinnigan, John Galliano, Oscar de la Renta, and Moschino Cheap & Chic.

Top row: Woodland Organic Duvet & Butterfly Embroidered Napkins @ Pottery Barn; Flower Mirror @ High Fashion Home; Sunflower Flock Pillow @ CB2.

Bottom Row: Light Within Bowl @ Anthropologie; Azha Wallpaper @ Trove; Spiral Vine Curtain @ Anthropologie; Butterfly Print Napkin @ Crate & Barrel.

From left: Luisa Beccaria, Wunderkind, Collette Dinnigan, and Temperley London.

I think I've made my point... Butterflies and flowers are everywhere! And why not? They're cheerful, they're free, and they're oh so fun!

Need A Bib?

Prada in the first two photos (Resort '09), then Marni (Spring '09), and Oscar de la Renta (Resort '09).
I'm all for easy ways to snazz up your outfit. For example, take one simple white tee, add one pair of jeans (skinny or slouchy look coolest), and embellish with one bib necklace. If you need help, take a cue from any of the designers here. They've all created their own amazing versions. It's adding a giant dose of sparkle to an otherwise lackluster outfit!

Spring 2009 Trend Overview

Despite the cold and wind, Spring is coming...eventually. At least, designers have presented their Spring 2009 collections, so you know the actual season can't be too far off. Last night, I attended the FGI Spring Trends Event with my fellow blogger, Eclectorator, and a fantastic time was had by all! We took a tour around Saks Fifth Avenue in the Galleria, saw the new merch, and ooh'd and aah'd over a pair of Louboutins.

The shoe in question... by Christian Louboutin.

Our real task was getting to know the newest trends for the upcoming Spring. Take a look and see what you think. What will you adopt? What will you skip? The good? The bad? The ugly? Take your pick...

Embellishments are taking all forms, but they're around. Sequins (at Elie Saab, left), beading (at Zac Posen, right), flowers (at Bluemarine, center), ruffles, you name it. It's going to be a fun season!

It's time to let your legs breathe! Pants were somewhat M.I.A. on the runway with skirts and dresses taking over. From left: Erin Fetherston, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Behnaz Sarafpour.

I love one-shoulder dresses! You can show some skin without being vulgar, and cover up without being prudish. It's the perfect balance! From left: Roberto Cavalli, Chloe, Lanvin.

What's the color of the season? Take your pick. It's all of them! From brights at John Galliano, to deeper hues at Prada, to subtle tones at Doo.Ri, you really can't go wrong with a little color.

Now, here's my favorite part: Prints. The prints are breathtaking this season. Flowers and watercolors and ikat, oh my! Every designer had such amazing prints it was impossible to narrow it down to three (but I still did it!) From left: Oscar de la Renta's ikat, Carolina Herrera's adorable pink and navy floral, Naeem Khan's colorful brush strokes.

A Look I Love

Two good examples from Reyes and Rag & Bone.

Winters in Houston are funny. Two days ago, I wore short sleeves and sandals to work. Today, I'm wearing a wool coat and boots. For a climate that isn't often cold, I love the look of a short-sleeved jacket over a long sleeved shirt. I've seen several people in our store sporting the look, and I've always told them how chic they look. One lady seemed totally surprised, claiming she hadn't been considered chic for 30 years! Chic and modest, what a lady! I, for one, fully intend to invest in a cool jacket under which I can layer a fitted long sleeve tee. I really like this one from Anthropologie:

Anticipation Jacket, $148

So pretty! And the fluttery sleeves would easily allow layering. I think I found a winner! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some shopping to do!

Yes, We Can!

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

In case you haven't heard, we do have a new president coming into office this month. Barack Obama ran his campaign on the message of 'Change'. His first big 'Change' initiative will be to redecorate the White House. He's enlisted the help of superstar, interior decorator Michael Smith. Smith's interiors mix furniture and art from a wide range of styles and periods in a way that is harmonious and modern.

His list of celebrity clients include Steven Spielberg, Dustin Hoffman, Brian Grazer, and Cindy Crawford. For more on this breaking, home decor news, head over to Domino. Check out some of his work below:

Fashion vs. Furniture: The Holiday Edition

'Tis the season for time with family, heavenly smells from the kitchen, and a vacation from work and school. 'Tis also the time for chaotic buying sprees, house cleaning frenzies, and overeating. Holidays: love 'em and hate 'em. Why not have a little fun this year? Fashion is fun and that can translate to a fun tablescape. Take some inspiration from Fall 2008 Couture and create a beautiful table for your guests!

Organic Eating: Simple, natural materials create an elegant setting- no special materials needed. Tablescape photo via Coco + Kelley. Dress by Anne Valerie Hash.

A Touch of Gold: A little sparkly on the table is always welcome. Martha Stewart perfects it with gilded pears. Coordinate it with a little bling on yourself. Coat by Christian Lacroix.

Wild Holiday: Who says you can only use red and green at your holiday table? A splash of hot pink is unexpected and festive. Tablescape photo via Totally Tabletops. Dress by Givenchy.

Textural: Mixing textures is an easy way to add depth to an otherwise simple table. I love the homemade felt holly napkin rings from Martha Stewart! Dress by Alexis Mabille.

Woodland Escape: Natural color and plantlife will be your inspiration. Bring the warmth of the outdoors to your table and make sure you have a roaring fire going! Tablescape via Martha Stewart. Dress by Elie Saab.

Winter Wonderland: This one is my absolute favorite. It's more fantasy than reality, but how could I resist a snowy confection fit for the Snow Queen herself? You can still take inspiration from it and decorate your table in snow white hues. Tablescape photo via Coco + Kelley. Dress by Christian Dior.

Fashion vs. Furniture: The Wedding Edition

There's no doubt about your answer when you're wearing this Dior ring!

I love a good wedding... especially when it's mine. Yes, it's finally here! I'm getting married on Saturday! And with all the wonderful wedding spirit in the air, I had to bring on another edition of Fashion vs. Furniture, because it's my favorite thing to do! Enjoy! (My, my, my, but weddings do bring out the exclamation point-edness in me!)

A Modern Art Gallery Soiree

An art gallery might not be the first place that comes to mind to host your wedding reception, but it could be an amazing option! All the decoration you need is in the art, so everything else should be kept clean and simple. For the dress, pick something that is a work of art in itself. I love this quirky layered gown I found at Martha Stewart. Gallery photo via Flickr, Dress by Lela Rose.

A Casual Beach Bash

When you take the nuptuals outdoors, it's a good chance to get relaxed- dress and all. Kick off your shoes (yeah, like you could walk down a sand aisle in heels!), and put on a flowy gown that matches the casual atmosphere. Dress by Angel Sanchez.

An Intimate Restaurant Affair

A reception at a swanky restaurant, such as Tavern on the Green in New York, is a great excuse to wear something glam and sparkly. Everything in the room, from the crystal to the velvet chairs, seems to light up, and why should the bride be any different? This dress from Lela Rose should do the trick quite nicely!

An Airy Picnic Party

I've always loved the idea of a sweet picnic reception on a lovely Spring day, but alas, a lovely Spring day in Houston is as difficult to predict as what I'll be doing in 30 years! For those of you with year round beautiful weather (Northern California, I'm looking at you!), a picnic complete with gourmet sack lunches and charming cotton blankets is a romantic way to celebrate in the daytime. This J. Crew wedding dress is perfect for a day in the park, too!

A Classic Hotel Celebration

Is this Carolina Herrera gown not just perfect for the setting at the Hotel Icon? A timeless backdrop deserves a timeless look, and Carolina Herrera always delivers that! There's really nothing more to say, except that this is beautiful!

A Family Backyard Festivity

If you're fortunate enough to have a generous backyard, put it to good use. I love how rustic the decor at this wedding looks. String up some lights for when the sun sets and the party never has to end. For an outdoor fiesta, I'd choose a gown in a classic shape, created from comfortable vegetable-dyed silk to stay cool all evening. As for fighting frizz- you're on your own! Fashion vs. Furniture: Project Runway Style

Bravo posted the final collections of the final SIX contestants weeks ago (is this a new thing?) so it was then that I began scheming to make a Fashion vs. Furniture out of it. I picked a favorite look from each designer's collection and paired it with a room that fits the style. The results are all over the map (and some just plain went off of the map).

Jerell's Design:

This dress, by Jerell, is a whole lotta busy- but it really works. The patterns and textures complement each other rather than fighting. A girl who wears this must have an apartment that is just as eclectic as her wardrobe. A vibrant mix of colors, patterns, and accessories make this place wild, but visually enchanting! Photo by Annie Schlechter.

Suede's Design

Suede designed a look that is clean cut and preppy. A girl in that dress would want an elegant and clean home that plays with proportions. Stripes are the ultimate in prepster chic and the room above makes good use of them. Photo by Max Kim-Bee.

Joe's Design:

Going for a rustic look doesn't necessarily condemn you to Wranglers and plaid shirts. Joe's design is rustic and girly at the same time- a breezy summertime frock. For home, take an otherwise sweet and feminine room and add cowboy touches like cowhide pillows. The rest of the room is urban lofty. It's the definition of eclectic. Photo by John Granen.

Korto's Design:

Young women always look lovely in color. Korto was very liberal in her bright color use for her collection. The apartment above looks like a young woman's dream home. Vibrant and playful- there isn't a single color of the rainbow you won't find in here- it's super feminine and perfect for a bubbly girl. Photo by Melanie Acevedo.

Kenley's Design:
Kenley is undisputedly the queen of retro on Project Runway and her final collection was no different. While she usually went for eyecatching floral prints for her frocks, I was more drawn to this sleek, black number. It's old school glamour, very ladylike, and stunningly sophisticated, like this room is also. Classic animal print along with sexy sixties inspired chair bring that retro feel. Dark wood brings to mind a dim martini bar. Photo by Brandon Barre.
Leanne's Design:
Leanne's impeccable designs are all about structure and morphing a two-dimensional material in a fabric scultupe that wraps are a body. For her final collection, she employed cool, airy colors to allow the designs to take the lead. This room is equally ladylike and mixes shapes and lines- curvy baroque chairs mesh with straight edges. Each piece is different, but they are all unified by their cohesive color scheme. Model Morphosis

The life of a model is ever changing. Don't be who you want to be- be who the photgrapher, designer, or magazine wants you to be. A model's physical appearance is as varied as the runways the walk on. Sometimes it's hard to believe that the girl walking gracefully at Chanel is the same one skipping youthfully at Betsey Johnson.

The NY Times ran an article called Model Morphosis charting a day in the life of a few models going through Fashion Week. If I didn't know it was just one girl, I almost wouldn't believe it.

A model goes through a lot of makeup (and makeup remover) in one Fashion Week, but imagine how much a supermodel goes through in a career. Let's run with that...

For this little experiment, I picked Isabeli Fontana. She models for Victoria's Secret, so I think that makes her pretty super. She's also doing ads for Valentino, Versace, and Roberto Cavalli this season. The photos run from 2001 to 2008. I think her makeup removal for Viktor & Rolf (row 5, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th pictures) alone could keep the baby oil industry afloat.

Fashion vs. Furniture: Autumn Trends

I can't get these great fall trends out of my head! And so, I decided it is time for another round of Fashion vs. Furniture, but this time, it's Fashion vs. Hotel. Hotel decor is, of course, a deciding factor for picking where you stay next to price and service. Everybody wants to stay someplace cool! My fashionistas are no different...

Look One:
A girl wearing a Dolce & Gabbana shaggy fur vest is one thing: Trendy. That vest won't make it longer than one season, but she can always get her trend-fix at the Clift Hotel in San Francisco...
The rest of the room may be classically beautiful, but if orange lucite doesn't scream, "Trend!", I don't know what does. And check out the resturant downstairs, Asia de Cuba. Trends may not last forever, but this one's got a good foundation to stand on.

Look Two:

Every trendy girl has a direct opposite- the classic beauty. She'll don a crimson pout, swept up chignon, and Kate Spade sunglasses day in and day out, but it will never, ever look tired. She takes her evening looks seriously, as is the case in Giambattista Valli (above), and she'll always be seen in an equally classic hotel- The Ambassador East in Chicago...

You can't compete with the hotel of choice of the ever-classic Frank Sinatra. The famous (or is it infamous) Pump Room downstairs served as his stomping ground for years. You don't get any more classic than that.

Look Three:

Donnatella Versace knows how to make a girl flash. A girl in Versace has the confidence, charming personality, and breathtaking looks to control the room anywhere, even the W Dallas...
Yes, a girl in Versace would still draw stares amongst the pretty people in Ghostbar, W's chic rooftop bar. So, get to flashing.

Look Four:

Some girl have that look of dark glamour about them, which is fortunate, because this Fall, that is the look a la Derek Lam. That girl needs a place that is just as glamorous with a good dose of edge. The place to be? Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City...

There is texture everywhere- wood, velvet, crystal. From the decadent lobby to the soaking tub, this place oozes sexiness.

Look Five:

When a girl wants a little romance, her go to gal is undisputedly Vera Wang. And when a girl needs a place to get, ahem, romantic, her go to hotel is the Delano in Miami...
How about a stay in an all white room with billowing sheer white curtains? How about a candlelit dinner in an outdoor cabana? Yep, that'll about do it!

Look Six:

Animal prints shoes? Cute accessory. Animal print coat from Blumarine? That makes for one ballsy chica. A girl in a coat like that is bold and impossible to miss which brings to mind another hard to miss locale- Trump Tower in New York City...

Any hotel that is dripping in crystal, marble, and most of all- gold is making a bold statement. And that is just where an equally bold soul needs to be.

More Bang for Your Buck

On The Rocks Sofa from Moss.

Harper's Bazaar ran an article recently entitled "Gucci or Gas?". They discussed the effect our economy is having on consumers' ability to purchase big-ticket items or "investment pieces". Accompanying the article, they showed how you could purchase an entire outfit for the cost of one pair of Louboutins. So I decided to do a little experiment.

Take a look at the sofa above. Cool? Modern? Minimalist? Yes, yes, and yes. It's also $21, 170. Now, let's see what else you could get with that much money...

Lemme break it down for you.
21,170 dollars will buy you one sofa from Moss or...
The Dexter Sectional $4599
An Antiqued Gold Mirror $316
Two Arden End Tables $718
An 8'x10' Clyde Rug $1479
The Dylan Entertainment Console $3299

Okay, so that's only this Fall, but I still get to celebrate it every year! There is a reason why people flock to the East Coast to watch leaves change color and everyone starts to wander outdoors- Fall is beautiful. And I've found so pretty things for myself and my home for the Fall...

From top left: Cashmere lined lambskin gloves from Coach, $98. Leather pillow covers from Pottery Barn, $99 each. Colorful Foliage scarf from Echo Design, $36. Cotton silk voile ombre blouse from Charles and Victoria, $298. Irish Coast Carved Chair from Ralph Lauren Home, $4245. Fiona Jacket from J. Crew, $198. Pumpkin Pie candle from Yankee Candle, $22.
