InStyle Magazine

InStyle Magazine - November 2009

I was at a dinner party the other night, when a friend congratulated us about being in InStyle magazine. I heard High Fashion Home might get a mention at some point. When months went by, I figured InStyle magazine just passed on us. Lo and behold, our Star Desk Clock was featured in the November 2009 issue. It also doesn't hurt that we are sharing the issue with Ms. Reese Witherspoon on the cover.

Polish Modernism!

This neat little home featured in the New York Times is Swiss inspired architecture located in the midst of a very traditional Polish town. The interior features simple concrete floors and particleboard walls.

The exterior features prominent vertical planks of spruce, instead of the plaster exterior used in most of Poland's "castle" homes. While the planks are more expensive upfront than plaster, the planks will age better than plaster over time and save money in the long run.

Check out the photos below. I know it's not for everyone, but it is cool nonetheless.

More, More, More Chalkboards!

I know, I know... Enough already with the chalkboard stuff! I promise that this is the last post on chalkboard stuff for quite a while.
I was looking at the Made by Girl blog, and she had a post on really cute chalkboard walls, so I had to share!
I like this a lot better than any tile backsplash out there!

Maybe this is what I should do with my old Ikea table... fun for my future kiddos!

How To Get A Leg Up...

posted by D*sign addict at 1 Comments

I am a recent leggings convert. It has taken me a little while to jump on the bandwagon, mainly because every pair I ever buy always ends up making me look like I have saggy baggy elephant legs. And girls, you know what I mean. Wearing pants made with Lycra and spandex leave little to the imagination as it is. It takes a bit of confidence to strut fully in leggings, but worn under a skirt or dress or tunic... yeah, I'll give it a go! But not if it means I am constantly pulling and tugging. Waistbands that dig in or roll down and saggy baggy knees are not my thing.
Thankfully we now carry a line of leggings here at High Fashion Home that actually keep their shape, stay in place and are flattering. We have regular, ribbed and patterned. And all our employees have already scooped up a pair.
The best part... the price tag. They start at $15.00!!!

You're So Vain

Everytime I pull my desk chair into the bathroom to flatiron my hair, I wish I had a vanity. First of all, there's barely enough room in the bathroom in which to put the chair, and if hubby and I are trying to get ready at the same time, it's downright impossible. I'm hoping I'll be able to make another small change once we move into a bigger apartment (and after that, a house!).

I found this photo on Apartment Therapy, and I think it's perfect for my needs. It's compact, inexpensive, and clean-lined. It doesn't hold a lot of stuff, but I'm not exactly what you'd call high-maintenance. My makeup drawer consists of a tube of Maybelline Great Lash and some concealer. Since I'll be losing my desk to a dining room table, this will be a great alternative location for my clear Ghost chair. All that's left is finding the perfect mirror and I'm all set! I love it when things go my way...

I came upon this the other day and it made me laugh so hard I had to share it.

Is the packaging meant to deter me? Or should I laugh at the message as I devour every morsel of chocolately goodness? You decide...

P.S. Play the Falling Piggies Game on their website. It's hilarious.

Weekend Inspiration

This weekend, my husband and I finally got to see (500) Days of Summer. Loved the movie and LOVED the chalkboard headboard in Tom's apartment! It makes me want to copy it in my bedroom, but, alas, I already have a real wooden headboard. But how cool would it be to create a modern headboard one day and a curvy, baroque one the next? Talk about creative license!

On a related note, I was reading my Daily Candy today and found that Hudson Paint is making chalkboard paint in some fantastic colors. Because most people don't want to paint their kid's wall dark, dark, dark grey. I really like the Bakery Green and the Safety Orange for bright and fun colors.

How Cool Is This?

This is real. Someone took a vintage Vespa and made it into a child's rocker. I am so freaking jealous. Check it out at Ohdeedoh.

You've Got Piles and Piles of Mail!

Did anyone out there resolve to be more organized this year? The question for me is, when don't I resolve to get more organized? One of the worst culprits for me is the mail. I pick it up, bring it inside, and dump it on the coffee table. I manage to pull out all of the bills I need to pay, but everything else, from magazines to oil change discount flyers, sits on that table until I get motivated enough to sort through the massive stack that has accumulated. And then there are times when I have more than one stack going! It's insanity!

On to my point... I really love this DIY mail sorter by Bright & Blithe! Imagine that! A home for my mail! No more running around the apartment in the morning berating myself for not being able to find the electricity bill, because it will be sitting snugly in the 'to be paid' folder. Another plus: this thing is seriously easy to make (with basic sewing skills). No more piles of mail on the coffee table? Hubby will be so proud!

I Love Macarons by Hisako Ogita at Amazon

Do you remember when I blogged about this book? Well, I got it! And now I am dying to try my hand at creating my own macaron masterpiece. The recipes are far from easy. They're time consuming and tricky, so why would I want to do that? Because I CAN! So, rather than wanted to lose weight or quit doing this or that, I resolve to make macarons in 2010. It's going to be quite a sweet year!

P.S. Did you notice the Daily Drop Cap I used by Jessica Hische? Quite useful, eh?

Drop A Cap In It

n case you didn't know, I love a good-lookin' letter. Daily Drop Cap is all about featuring that beautiful letter at the front of your paragraph. They're designed by Jessica Hische, and a new one comes out daily. I vote for dropping a cap in your next TPS report and seeing how that goes over with the higher-ups.

Living Room Sofas: How to Choose the Right One

The typical household spends most of its time in the living room, lounging on the living room sofas. It's the space where guests are entertained, television is watched, family time is spent, and books are read. Furthermore, the central piece of furniture is the living room sofa. Therefore, it's extremely important that when you go shopping for living room sofas, you select the right one for your home. Follow these tips to finding the ideal living room sofa.

1. Know what you want
Before you begin shopping for your living room sofa, make a list of exactly what you want your couch to have. Do you need a large living room sofa in your modern home décor to accommodate the number of guests you frequently have over? Are there other special features that you want your living room sofa to have? Write it all down, and bring the list with you when you visit furniture stores to find your ideal living room sofa.

2. Keep color in mind
It may seem obvious, but in the chaos involved with living room sofa shopping, you could look over one of the most important things: the color of the couch. Before you go shopping, take a look at your living room's décor and take note of what colors would match or complement that décor. Now keep these colors in mind as you go shopping for your perfect living room sofa.

3. Material is important
There are many options for materials when it comes to living room sofas: leather, fabric…the list goes on. This is one of the most important factors to consider before beginning to look for your living room sofa. Do you have pets or messy children? If so, you will want a living room sofa that's easy to clean and stain-resistant.

These are just three things to keep at the front of your mind when shopping for your living room sofa. Remember, this piece of furniture will be used for years to come, so take your time to ensure that you get the living room sofa that's right for your home and lifestyle.

These generally accompany with the other decorative stuff such as accent tables, chairs, furniture, dining tables, chandeliers, home fabrics, beds and many. All these together make a simple and an eye catchy home.
